THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER 7 LOCALS 1-417, 1-85. . . All areas of the local union were represented at the An- nual Safety Conference held in late October in Kamloops. A good number of important resolutions, were processed by the delegates, dealing with accident prevention and health protection proposals which will now be furthered by the local union in line with established policy. Resolutions included timely suggestions such as calling for the provision of fire protection apparel for persons serving on volunteer industrial fire fighting teams. Another resolution called for a ban on herbicides used for defoliation which contain dioxins, while another proposal called for mandatory require- ment for adequate braking systems for wood chipping units, and yet another resolu- tion urging a full scale para- medic ambulance service to provide better life-saving care. A special feature of the con- ference introduced a drug recognition series presented by two well trained RCMP specialists from the narcotics division. Official visitors to the con- ference included Regional Safety and Health Director Max Salter and Regional Safety Council officers Tom McCrae and Jack Higgins. . .. HOLD FALL CONFERENCES Late October was the dating for the fall conference on Safety for the Port Alberni local area.
