Trying to be sensitive . TERRACE — Socred leader Jack Weisgerber isn’t exactly wandering through the wilderncss but he does admit there are a Jot of forces opposing his party's ‘no’ stand on the proposed con- stitutional changes in the Charlot- tetown Accord. “A year ago I expect I would ~have;?’» -said- -Weisgerber- when- asked during a visit here last weck if he would have supported the changes if the Socreds were - still in power. ‘There's pressure now being applied not unlike the kind of in- fluence used on MLAs and mem- bers (of parliament) when Mcech Lake was presented to vote in favour of Mccch,” he said, ‘We did so then with consider- _ able hesitation, even though the majority of British Columbians were not in favour of that deal ~ with its distinct socicty,’”’ added _ Weisgerber. But things have now changed _ since the Socreds were defeated in- last fall’s provincial election and now stand as the third party in the legislature. “We're making an alicmpt lo be sensitive to the wants and needs of the average British Columbian,’ said Weisgerber. “We want to represent the people to whom we look to for support.”’ ’ And that adds up to a four-point position of opposing the proposed changes. , Weisgerber opposes the Canada Clause in the Charlottetown ac- cord: because il gives special status to certain groups of people, including Quebe¢ and nalives. ‘It’s a divisive measure, not a - direction we'd like to see our constitution heading,’’ he said. “Ts not a very positive thing.”’ “Weisgerber is also not happy with the transfer of 36 Senate positions to the House of Com- . mons for Quebec and Ontario be- cause itll centralize power. in: - those two provinces: ~ He ties that in with the securing of 25 per cent of the House of Commons seats for Quebec despite what its share of the pop- ulation might be. Senators elected by region, The greatest worry to Weisger- ber is the granting of the inherent right to aboriginal self govern- ment without first providing a definition. “There’s no sense of the scope or the jurisidiction or the cost. That whole section needs a great deal more work,’’ said Weisger- ber. “T believe that aboriginal self government is a form of local government,”’ he said. , Weisgerber adds that native governments will be able to over- - ride the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and to pass laws with the same authority as those of the provinces. “That'll represent a changed pattern I don’t think we'd like to sec,’’ he said. Weisgerber’s final point is the granting to every province of a veto to any fulure contsitutional changes. “We can see a situation where any changes would be very, very unlikely,’’ he said. : - Accord opposed Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 7, 1992 — Page A7 \Northerns2 BACK TO SCHOOL SALE EXTENDED _ON RAVEN PRINTERS & DATATRAIN CPU'S UNTIL OCTOBER 16/92 4720 Lazelle Ave, Terrace B.C.
