Scholarship for Ford Caledonia Senior High School graduate Adam Ford’s love for the game of soccer has paid off in a B.C. Youth Soccer Associa- tion scholarship. Ford was notified: last week about the Canada Safeway award valued at $300. His was one of 12 similar honors handed out by B.C.Y.S.A. Another graduate from North Vancouver picked up a $500 award. - Ford, who will be attending UBC this fall under the pre- commerce program, hopes to make one of the school’s soccer teams. If not, he plans to play intra-mural soccer and try out again in his second year. Ford has been on his school’s academic honor roll since grade nine. He has received.a cer- tificate of achievement from School District 88 board of trustees for marks of over 90 ADAM FORD exams. Through his teenage years, Ford has played and coached soccer regularly, and conducted a two-week coaching clinic for children last summer. He was also a volunteer laborer (without pay) for two weeks during in- stallation of a sprinkler system for the new fields at Christy Park. ~ His future goal is a degree in Terrace’s Wade Flaherty, the 19-year-old goaltender for the Western Hockey League’s Vic- toria Cougars this past season, had to wait until the ninth round 4 before he was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the June 11 National Hockey League eniry draft. The. Terrace-born Flaherty was pick number 181 out of the 252 juniors, high school and col- lege players, and talent from Europe named by the 21 NHL squads as their property. - This year he was named to the WHL’s second all-star team, placing runnerup to Vancouver Canuck-owned Troy Gamble of ‘the Spokane Chiefs. Flaherty was a member of the Terrace Minor Hockey team that won B.C. championships in peewee, bantam and midget divisions in the late 70’s and ear- ly 80s. Flaherty told us that early last Terrace Review — Wednesday, June 15, 1988 11 Wade Flaherty picked for NHL that he was rated 22nd goaltender in the talent pool, meaning he’d likely get drafted, but not high up in the early rounds. Flaherty said a check on previous drafts indicated an average of 28 netminders were selected every year. Flaherty said being selected in the ninth round is fine, with him. He pointed out that teammate Peter Fry had a good year in 1986-87, and he went in the 10th round to New Jersey. “Tt would have been nice to go earlier, but at least I went and that’s what counts,’’ he told us. Flaherty says he’ll go to Buf- falo’s training camp on Sept. 15. He said they have two high-pro farm teams in the American and International leagues. “Pm going to camp with the attitude I’m going. to do © something with the Buffalo organization next season and not return to Victoria.” He still has one more year of junior eligibility. The Cougars named him their most valuable player and most improved talent this past year. In late August he’ll be instruc- ting at the Terrace Summer Hockey School. Buffalo made 14 selections in the draft, including Flaherty’s right-wing teammate Joel Savage — the Sabres first choice in the opening round, and 13th overall. Wade was the only goalie named by the Buffalo selectors. The Terrace Tennis Club invites tennis enthusiasts to come and join the fun!
