Caucus, all members of N.D.P. B.C, Caucus and the Right Honourable John Turner. Furthermore, members of the "coalition" have met in Ottawa with some of our B.C. Members of Parliament and several Senators. We have also met with the Honourable Michael Wilson when he was in Vancouver last week. The message is simple. West Coast shipbuilding is a major contributor to the western economy and we need Federal action immediately if we are to save the industry with its specialized capabilities and design/construction expertise. The figures showing the economic impact on the Lower Mainland of this industry are cutlined in this correspondence. We would ask that you peruse the attached and strongly support our efforts by: receiving this material at your Council meeting and passing appropriate supportive resolutions; - communicating your support to your M.P.'s and M.L.A.'s. There have been no recent contracts awarded to West Coast shipyards despite the fact that eastern shipyards are working on the long term frigate program and a recent $125,000,000 CN ferry contract awarded. Nevertheless, there is a strong Quebec industry lobby involving newspaper advertisements and the like and it is therefore particularly important that our case be clearly stated and understood. Thank you for your assistance. Yours very truly, U Lb Le by LGA Jack Loucks a raha oa Baker Yt MAYOR ‘OR : City of North Vancouver District of North Vancouver Enc: MB; afh
