THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM Kirk, July 8, 1988 Administrator FROM: Chong, P. Eng., Ci Engineer SUBJECT: Purchase of Laser Grade Setter (Public Works Committee Meeting July Recommendation: That a laser grade setter be purchased from Conag Laser Alignments for approximately $7,900 and that the necessary funds be taken from the 1988 Unallocated Sewer Capital Budget. Background and Comments: The attached memo prepared by the Assistant Operations Manager provides the basis for this request. The City's existing laser grade setter is some 15 years oid and jis beyond economical repair. This instrument {ts used on a regular basis by the sewer crew in laying pipes although at times it can be used by other crews as well. The replacement of this laser was discussed several years ago but Councii| approval was not given. Since that time the lassr has undergone repairs totallina over $1,000. To date it is not useable. During the installation of sewers on Harbour Street it was necessary to rent a laser from Conag Laser Alignments at a cost of approximately $1,000 per month. Although the Harbour Project is now completed, we have retained the laser for other sewer installation works including those on Wellington Street. is expected that the rental period for the laser this year exceed the maximum of three months rent credit which Conag apply to the purchase price of the unit. Taking this into ideration, the price which the City will now have to pay .to ire this laser wili be as follows: Original list price > 10,865 Less for trade-in allowance (existing laser) | 1,600 Less maximum 3 month rental 3,000 Net Cost to City 6,265 + tax
