PENSIONS MAJOR GOAL TORONTO — The annual policy conference of the 120,- 000-member Canadian wing of the United Steelworkers of America endorsed a call by its national director for a bar- gaining program aimed at providing major pension gains. William Mahoney, the un- ion’s national director, in his report to nearly 400 delegates urged as a goal a total retire- ment income of 75 percent of best earnings for an employee with 30 years of service. The conference called for total retirement benefits at this level payable as early as age 60 and at a lower age after fewer years of service for those forced into retire- ment because of disability and for survivors. The object of these week- end education classes was to give members of newly or- ganized plants an opportun- ity to become acquainted with: (a) The Agreement (b) Grievance Procedure (c) The Structure of the IWA (d) Responsibilities of Stew- ards The first weekend class was held at Williams Lake for Stewards and Committees from the Canim Lake Saw- mills and Northern Studs Ltd., now owned by Weld- wood of Canada. A second weekend: course was held in Quesnel for Stew- ards and Committee members from the J. Ernst Lumber Co. Litd., Ernst Planing Mill Ltd., and Timber Services Ltd. Contract analyses weekend courses for Stewards at Fort St. John Lumber Co, Ltd., Chetwynd, B.C., were held May 8th and 9th in the Legion Hall at Chetwynd. This will be the last in a series of educational courses by the Local until later this year, Plans are under way by the Local to arrange further education for stewards and Committee members on other topics of interest to the mem- bers of the Local.
