Returns In 1973. the Terrace and Smithers offices of the Skeena Health Unit offered pre-school screening at the four year old level for the first time. The interest shown by Lhe com- munities was really en- couraging, and we feel this type of screening should be offered again. This year, all larger offices in this Health Unit are’ planning pre-school screening” ys. Early identification of - problems in such areas as vision, hearing, language development and motor control is useful to allow parents to obtain help fer the child before he goes to school. For example, a child whe cannot hear. properly will not be able . to listen to what an adult tells him and may be thought to ‘be disobedient until his problem is identified. We have chosen four year olc children as the group to screer. . _to understand. and follow ‘the {nstructions for the tests.- When ‘you bring your child to the Health Unlt. for the Health Parade we try to make his’ , experience pleasant and en- jayable..The child is’ weighed and his height is measured. He will be shown’ a “fly” in three dimensions to test his ability lo see objects in depth. His vision will be checked using simple chart of hearts, squares and circles. He will be asked to respond . to sounds . while wearing a pair of earphones. Each child will participate in the, Denver Developmental Sereening Test (DDST). Many . health units find the DDST a useful method of assesing the development . of young children. The child is asked to perform simple lasks lo show his development in four Key ' areas: * “1, the use of his’ large muscles (e, Bes hopping running, 2. the ‘use of his sme - muscles (e.g., ability to.use his hands and contract his fingers). - 3 -his ability lo understand and use language." - -4, his ability 10 take care of himself and~ get along’ with others. (e.g., dress himself}, Some of the tasks will be easy for your child, but to determine ‘the level he has reached he will also bé asked to do things that * he may be unable to do at his age. Most children - think the DDST is fun’ and enjoy demonstrating their skills. . The DDST is useful in -poin-- ting out areas in which the child is or is not developing according to the expectation for his or her age: When these areas are discussed-with parents there is . opportunity for an exchange of ideas on how the child may be stimulated. For example, a ‘child who comes from a home ‘where English is the second language -may. need more - _ PAGE B3 - SKEENA BAND | BOTTLE DRIVE Thy Saturday morning the Skeena ‘Secondary Bands wil “hold a bottle drive.
