Body and Soul stand out It may not be his moat commercial work to date, but Joe Jackson's Body and Scull (A and M Records) stands out from his seven-album catalogue fo its keen. sense of sophistication and broad-based appeal. It’s a coup of sorts for Jackson, a product of Britain’s new wave movement who only three oe four years ago was Bpinning his wheels in frustration over what he saw as a rock 'n’ roll wasteland. Shucking all sense of pop convention, he emerged with an album of ’403 swing, and followed up a year later with his excellent Night Mafia CHICAGO (AP) — Her childhood Santa ‘Claus was played by a loan shark. Her first lover was a family priest. And her daddy was a mob kingpin. Antoinette Giancana says that's what growing up was like as the daughter of Sam (Momo) Giancana, a man described .by crime experts as the most powerful mobster since Al Capone. As Giancana’s daughter, she luxuriated in the world of Mafia privilege and power: Paris fashions, Las Vegas nightclubs and Hollywood celebritles. But Antoinette Giancana was daring. And she says she paid for her indiscretions. Beatings from her father. A back-room abortion. Suicidal moods. Shock treatments in a mental hospital. And ostracism from her family. Now, Giancana, 48, is rebelling once again, breaking a Mafia code of silence. This time, she’s on the road promoting her book, Mafia Princess: Catholic church ROME (AP) — The Roman Catholic Church is increasingly turning to advertising and other publicity campaigns to attract men to the priesthood, Dioceses and -religious orders have put up billboards, taken out advertisements in magazines and newspapers and organized conventions to recruit young men. The message is driven home by Pope John Paul, who makes a point during his foreign travels of asking families to “contribute a son to the church,” The Vatican’s most recent statistics show there were 413,600 priests among the world’s 790 million Roman Catholics at the end of 1980, a drop of 12,000 since 1975. and Day, a release which : was remarkable for {ts percussion-heavy~ rich textures and its total lack of guitars. Jackson back-pedals a little on Body and Soul to engage ina limited return to the pop norm. But the album is dominated by his clear love for more vintage ~—- and more -highbrow — musical devices, Including elements of jazz, salsa and even classical music, Body and Soul is neither a rock album nor a work ag drastically opposed as his Jumpin’ Jive exercise in swing. Rather, it’s an intelligent blend of old and new. He acknowledges contemporary forms with his funky You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) and the popish Go For It and Happy Ending, But he scores highest with such weightler cuts as The Verdict, Loco, Heart of Iee and the beautifully evocative instrumental Lolsalda. _ Jackson's vorals have never been stronger, best evidenced by his wark on the ballads Net Here, Not Now and Be My Number Two. The latter, moody and melodic, is a true gem. Call DAVE McKEOWN 635-7459 Bardot controversy OTTAWA (CP) — French actress Hrigitte Bardot, who devotes much of her time to the protection of endangered anjmal species, has touched off: an international incident by donating an ivory bracelet for a Quebec City auction. The bracelet, sent to Quebec’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is made from the tusks of elephants — an endangered species. Producis from elephant ivory are banned from import into 86 countries under an international treaty observed by Canada and France. Bardot, 49, who for years hag publicly opposed the annual seal hunt off Newfoundland, contributed the bracelet, valued at $300, to help the society offest its $96,000-deht. But the bracelet, which arrived by mail at the Canadian border Wednesday, was confiscated by Customs Department officials. Federal officials in Ottawa will now study Bardot'’s bauble to determine If it really is ivory. If it’s fake, it will be turned over to its intended © recipient, M.A. Gallup, assistant:deputy minister in the department sald Saturday. But if it is real, it could be locked up forever in a Revenve Department showcase to remind Canadians of the danger of importing goods fashioned from endangered animal species. However, the French government can secure its release with the appropriate export permit, accompanied by a Canadian import permit obtained by the society. Society president Serge De Beaumon said he has asked Revenue Minister Pierre Bussieres to help the group get the bracelet. De Beaumon sald he is certain Bardot would never purchace an item made from endangered animais. "She probably got it (the bracelet) aa a present, and because it was made out of an endangered species, decided to give it to us to help animals.” The society has already postponed its auction, scheduled for the first week in May, so the matter ¢ can be cleared up, De Beaumon said.
