Office Pugsley Street TH OMINECA MINER, BATURDAY, MAY 1, 11 — TAFT AND ROOSEVELT HAVE WORDY WAR President and Ex-President Tell People Their Opinions of Each Other. Boston, May 6:;—From thetime President Taft entered Massa- chusets until the conclusion of his tour through the state, he persistently hammered away at Colonel Roosevelt. In all his speeches he made it clear that he is inalterably opposed to Mr. Roosevelt; that he saw disaster in a third term in the White House for any man and that he did not believe Colonel ‘Roosevelt had given him asquare deal. He spoke to good sized crowds in all the cities where he made set speeches, and at the towns and villages where his train stopped briefly the people flacked around his private car and listen- ed with close attention, Mr. Taft referred to some of Mr, Roosevelt’s charges against him as the “loose and vague in- dictment of one who does not know and who depends only upon second-hand information for his statements,”’ Roosevelt Replies Worcester, Mass., May 6:— Merciless denunciation of Presi- dent Taft was Colonel Roosevelt's reply to the president’s attacks upon him. Some of Colonel Roosevelt’s assertions were: That President Taft had not given the people a ‘square deal;’? that owing toa ‘quality of feeble- ness,’ he had “yielded to the bosses and the great privileged interests;’’ that one part of the president's attack on him was the “‘erookedest kind of a deal, and deliberate misrepresentation;”’ that the president had not merely in thought, word and deed been “disloyal to our past friendship, but has been disloyal to every canon of ordinary decent and fair dealing such as should obtain even in dealing with a man’s bit- terest opponents;"’ that the presi- dent’s statements regarding the federal office holders in the cam- paign ‘‘was not only an untruth but an absurd untruth.” FAST FREIGHT and PASSENGER SERVICE ’ Route Your Freight via the Steamer “Inlander” H. May 6:—The Mecum brothers, Arthur Brown and Bonnar, the four desperadoes brought to the prison here on March 1'and who made a desper- ate attempt to escape from their keepers at the Union station, To- ronto, that day, made their es- cape from the prison at 11a. m. on Monday with another prisoner named Vincent McNeil, Four were captured shortly after- wards, but Frank Mecum, other- wise known as Jones’ and Billy, eluded capture for a couple of hours, The five prisoners were con- fined to the isolation ward, and one of them, who was allowed out in front of his cell to sweep the floor, overpowered Keeper Madden and Guard Ross, se- verely injuring the latter. Dr. Phelan, the prison surgeon, was also attacked, and with Keeper Madden-was stripped of his cloth- ing and afterwards locked in a cell, Taking the keys away from the officers the one prisoner then set the others free, They then raced to the north gate, where the gate keeper, seeing the offi- cers as he supposed, opened the gate and was promptly knocked on the head and pushed aside. Then it was an easy matter for the men to eseape, The men ran to the warden’s grounds where they knocked on the head Keeper MeCarthy, who tried to intercept them, They then ran in the direction of the prison quarry where one was overpowered by a scout. sent out with a rifle, Hesurrendered and was turned over to the quarry gang and returned to the prison,. Another of the prisoners was caught by Watchman Clark in Portsmouth. Two of the others were caught at Cataraqua creek, on the front road, after endeavoring to elude and escape five officers by jumping into the water and ducking their heads |" under when shots were fired, After a time they surrendered and were returned to the prison. The other convict, Frank Jones, was caught about 1.15 hiding in ashed:in Portsmouth. A little girl found him there and notified the authorities. He said he was a guard from the prison and that he was looking for the men who had escaped, ’ Wanted for Murder, | Kamloops, May 9:— Charles Mason, who ig serving a sen- tance of sixty days imprisonment \ | for fraud, having been convicted at Field, B.
