Park Report Regacaay | | Parks sS9 McDonald ah 4. Sunshine For ‘Supper A caterpillar eating a leaf. A robin eating an earthworm. A lion dining on a zebra. You munching on a slice of papperont pizza. You might think you and all the others don't have much in common when it comes to choosing your supper, but you do — you'rs all consumers. That means you, yourse!t don't make the energy and raw materials, called nutrients and food, that you need to live, You get them by eating plants or animals. Alt life depends on plants. That's because green plants are the only livirg things that use the energy fram the sun to make the food they need. Plants are the world’s most important producers. The easlest way to understand how tiving things get the food they need is to think of the tinks ina chain ~ a foad chain. Start with a plant at one end of the chain, maybe a clump of grass. The grass traps the sun's energy and uses It to make food. Along comas a mouse, say, and adds another link to (he chain by eating the grass seed. It's gatting tha food energy the grass stosed. Then later. on, a snake eats the mouse. Ancther link in the chain. Then a hawk eats the snake,” In time averything =. grass, mouse, ‘snake, and hawk — will die, The leaves, roots, and bodies will be broken down by tiny plants and animals called decomposers. These are nalures recyclers, The dead plants and animals become nutrients that new plants can use to grow. All the animals‘in the food chaln are consumers, and they all depend on the grass. The snake and the hawk are called predators because they got their dinners by aating another animal, their prey. Of course, this isn’t the only food chain that could be built up from this sama clump of grass, A beetle might eat some of the grass. Then a praying mantis might eat the beetle and then an owl might eat the mantis and so.on. What if a rabbit ate the grass? Or a deer? No one food chain can show ail the ways different producers, predators and prey relate to each other, or the way. decomposers act on them. To do that you have to draw a food web — a network of many connected food chains. But however complicated the web gets, two things are always trua; plants are the only living things that can trap the sun's energy to make food, and all animals and decomposers depend on this food. All living things dépend on the energy In plants to survive, and'plants depend on the sun's energy, so in the end everyone eats. sunshine for supper! : Sea you in the park.
