Pleasant, 18; North Van City, 18; Waterfront, 13; Kensing- ton, 12; South Burnaby, 12; Pine, 10; and Strathcona, 10. Top provincial press club is Powell River, 28 subs on a quota of 30. Lions have had the enthusias- tic support..of this _football- crazy town. Yet. year after year the Lions have finished in the cel- lar, with -solemn assurances that “next year” would be dif- ferent. For a while 1959 appeared to be “the” big year. Starting with a rush, beating Edmonton twice, the Lions really seemed to have hit their stride. Fans began lining up for playoff tickets. Suddenly the old familiar story. The team began to come apart at the seams. Randy Duncan couldn't throw a slip- pery ball. Injuries took a few players out of the lineup. Dis- sension caused a couple of im- portant cogs ito leave the wheel, in the WIFU, yet can’t win games? Professional foothall is a business: Money talks. Players are bought like soap and cheese and Cadillacs. By this reckoning, the team with the most moola should be: able to buy the best players. come up with a Grey Cup. But in life, the formula doesn’t seem to work. Where does the fault lie? Manage- ment? Coaching? Morale? No football expert, this cor- ner won’t guess at the basic trouble. But even an outsider can see that something is wrong somewhere: that the Lions will have to come up with an answer next season, or football will be thrown for a loss from which it bined never recover.
