Hearn left for the south on Saturday evening, and his departure marked the end-of the sal- mon hatchery project of the Domin- ion Fisheries Department. The present hatchery has been in operation since shortly after the war, and, prior to that, salmon culture was carried on for a long time at the old plant on Trout river. But during the past few years the lads of the Biological Board have been prying into things at the hatch- ery at Cultus lake, and because they turned thumbs down on that plant and its work the. Fisheries Depart- ment decided to close down all their hatcheries. Opinion seems to be divided on the. wisdom of the move, and there are many people who say that within a few years the canneries are. going to notice a marked drop in the fish available, These people paint to the happenings such as the. flood a year. ago, when all the local spawning beds were swept away, making almost 100% destruction of the eggs that had been spawned naturally. . ‘Part of the hatehery’ equipment has been packed and shipped to fish- ery warehouses at other points, and the balanee has been €urned over to the Indian Department ,for the use of the native people, , It is understood that-plans are in hand for stripping the buildings of the most valuable parts of equip- ment, and plumbing fixtures, piping, doors, windows and other goods will It is also possible that 2 con- siderable part: of this material will he used in the new Indian schoo] and teacherage ‘that is now being built at Vanarsdol. As the train drew in on. Saturday evening 9 large crowd of friends of Major Hearn congregated to bid him farewell and wish him good fortune for the future. Included in the party was Eiror DuPont, Matt’s partner, and well up the Beaver river they spent one day climbing to skyline, and didn’t see a goat.
