Bi4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 9, | Bantam girls head to Alaska WHAT A way to kick off a season. The Bantam Girls of Tertace Minor Softball are get- ting the jump on Spring by competing at a tournament in Ketchikan, Alaska. The team heads north April 17 for the weekend-long tourney that will see the girls battle teams from Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka and many other Alaskan com- munities, ‘*ft’s a big tournament,” says Nolan Beaudry of Ter- race Minor Softball. “And I guess with us there, that makes it an international competition." Some 16 girls in Terrace’s Bantam division, ages 14 and 15, will take part in the tournament. And although they haven’t played outdoors yet this year, Beaudry is confident the team will be ready for the competition. ‘*We’ve been practicing indoors since the beginning of February,’ he says. “‘And most of the girls are al- ready good athletes anyway.’’ Beaudry says this is the first time Terrace has sent a team to the Alaskan event, where the season starts slightly earlier because of their coastal climate. “This is unprecidented,” he says. ‘‘It's a great idea and a super way to start the season.”’ Athletes smash birds at tourney BIRDS WERE fying in Terrace two weekends ago at the Black Knight Doubles Tournament. In the ladies doubles, first place went to Karen Resch and Eilecn Birkedal. Second place went to Diane Cey and Julie Grinham and third was nabbed by Mary Louise Crespo and L. Patterson. Silver went to Carl Goodall and Mike Cooper, while the bronze was taken by Henri Michaud and Kevin Strangway, Finally, in the mixed doubles, Dave Munro and Kathleen Parry took first spot. Daren Chalupiak and Julie Grinham were second. And Henri Michaud and Cailin Kovacs fin- ished third. Over the weekend, the Terrace Open Badminton Tourns- ment was held. Results were not available at press time, so watch for them in an upcoming Standard. Soccer season starts soon PLAYOFFS FOR men’s indoor soccer get underway this Sunday.
