News In Brief National unity change needed AN OVERWHELMING majority of those who phone in to a Reform Party of Canada national television show last week said the national unity issue must be resolved once and for all. Approximately 10,000 people phoned in and 93 per cent said ‘yes’ to the above. Of those who called, 29 per cent a complete separation of Quebec was the best course of action for Canada while 57 per cent wanted a change in the federal system for all of Canada. 7 Ninety-two per cent of the callers said a bottom-up process was best for setting the framework for Canada’s future. Those who called the show’s 1-900 number were charged a $1 a minute for costs. Any surplus monies will be contributed toward paying down the national debt. Airline gets debt extension A SMITHERS-BASED airline which flics into Terrace has received another extension to ils plan to solve ils financial problems. Central Mountain Airlines sought protection from its creditors in the spring aftcr recording debts of $13.7 million to approximately 130 creditors, The company has already received two, 45. -day extensions and the third one was granted this past weck, “The changes were have undertaken and the changes currently underway have had a positive impact on the company,” said Cen- tral Mountain spokesman Peter Bymes. The company says it has been profitable since it began trying to solve its financial problems and has the co-operalion of its major creditors. Spending riles group THE CANADIAN Taxpayers Federation bas taken Victoria to task for failing to slim down government. While premier Harcourt has boasted of eliminating 20 govern- ment agencies since the NDP came to power, federation spokesman Troy Lanigan pointed out his government had also created 46 new ones over the same period. The federation produced a list of the agencies including BC 21, the Forest Practices Board, Massage Therapy Audit subcommittee and Private Investigators and Security Agencies advisory board. Fire aid given A LOCAL MAN is receiving help after he Jost his uninsured log home ina fire last week. Gus Collins, 72, was trealed for smoke inhalation and cuts after he escaped through a window in his Qaming home last Wednesday night. Collins was living alone in home on the Zymacord Reserve west of Terrace. The home owned was owned by his son, Reynold Collins. As of last weekend the Kitsum- kalum Band Office had received $870 in donations along with clo- thing, blankels and towels for Collins. According to band councillor Laura Miller, Collins was released from Mills Memorial Hospilal last Friday and will be slaying with his daughter, Trudy Hansen. “The entire house was com- pletely engulfed in flames by. the time we got there,’ said Gorden Roberis, fire chief of the Kitsum- kalum Volunteer Fire Depart- ment. Although they had the aid of four pumper trucks from the Thomhill Fire Department, said Roberts, the house was complete- ly destroyed. The fire broke out about 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night, but the fire department didn’t receive the. alarm until 10:30 p.m, according to Roberts.
