AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 23, 2002 Casino plan dropped after cabinet says no Terrace Inn owner reconsidering his options By JEFF NAGEL A LOCAL hotel owner has withdrawn his plan to build a destination casino and convention centre here after a for- ceful rejection from the provincial government lastweek. 2 John Georgilas’ pro- posed $8 million complex adjoining the Terrace Inn appeared to have gained the tentative support of 4 majorily of city council- lors. _ But he says he's going back to the drawing board . after cabinet decided: at its Jan. 16 open meeting’ it will consider no new desti- nation casinos. “There’s no need for. me to apply if they don’t ac- cept applications for desti- nation casinos,” he said. Consideration of : his proposal had been slated to begin at city hail Fri- day. ; Four councillors © - David Huli, Marylin Da- vies, Ron Vanderlee, and Rich McDaniel - had come out tentatively in Fa- vour of the development Terrace Inn owner John Georgilas wants to build next to the hotel. Vanderlee and McDa- niel both say the situation is different now from four years ago, when they voted against allowing a charity casino here. Under destination casi- no rifles, the city could John Georgilas have taken in an estimated $1.2 million as its share of gambling revenue, wilh ‘perhaps another $300,000 more. coming from addi- ticnal property taxes. Councillors also liked the . conférence centre aspect of the. proposal. | “Opposed to the casino, citing the social. cost of gambling: addiction, ‘were councillors “Val George and Lynne Christiansen. Vowing to -keep its election: promise not to ex- pand gambling, cabinet approved a plan that firmly closes ‘the. door to new destination casinos. But it did agree to allow relocation of up to four community casinos in ‘places where slot ma- chines are now banned to slot-friendly towns. Solicitor General Rich Coleman conceded that could be viewed as an ex- pansion of gaming, but said operators who worked on relocation plans based on government pro- mises might be able to sue Victoria if they weren’t al- lowed to proceed, The plan could see 1,200 new slot machines added around the province. Terrace declared itself against casino gambling in 1998 and passed a bylaw banning slot machines here. Premier Gordon Camp- bell said towns won’t be allowed to reconsider or teverse positions they'd: taken betnre. Georgilas said he may explore whether one of the community ‘casino li- cences could yet. be brought here. But shifting the propo- sal from a destination ca- sino to a community one would have big implica- tions on both the scope of the project and the likeli- hood of council supporting it. A community casino would mean a much smal- ler share of the revenue for the town and Georgilas, - and a much greater share for the province. Because of that, Geor- gilas said, he’d likely have to remove the conference centre part of the proposal — another aspect that councillors found more at- tractive this time. “Ym still trying to put the numbers together but it doesn’t look very good.” School insulation not a hazard, WCB decides THE WORKERS’ Com- pensation Board has not found any asbestos insula- tion at Caledonia Senior Secondary.
