This subutesion by 3FZC looks at some of the probleas pertinent to the
continuing use of pesticides, particularly in relation to nooquite contro]
prograsnes,

The society expresses its viewsoint that air spraying of adult mosquitos
(adulticiding) should te phased out whenever feasible and that programnes
of hand spraying of mosquito larva (larvieiding) should be established.

Hand spreying is ecologically preferable +o air spraying, furthermore,

unexnloyed persons or simmer studento,

Beekeeper Associations in B. €. outlining their particular problems with
resnect to the damage done to their hives as a result of eerisl spraying
for mosquito control.

MOSQUITO CONTROL AND PESTICINES

Spee does not oppose mosquito control tut we are erposed to the present
netheds of Adulticiding by wide srread aerial Spraying. This method affects
non target te essentiat insect species, furthersore the soray affects
human beings. In the latter context if is a demial of what should te a
fundamental right of Canadians, that is, their Tight to be secure against
any poisons as distributed by private individuals, peblic or privates
organizations.

Recent evidence from California has shown that a tote? cheaical control
of the mosquite by the uae of insecticides is absolutely useless. Vector
Centrol Officers in California have been using total chemical control
to kill mosquitoes for many years and now find themselves in the serious
predicament of having to Tight en outbreak of encerhalitis acong humass
because the msquito has become immune to all of the pesticides; such
immunity being rassud on to their offsering, As a result, the mosquitoes
have been breeding unchecked since August of 1970. Cfficials in Califor
aleo feel that any new insecticide to come on the market will follow the
