Four Lane Operation on Shaughnessy

Hamilton's proposal is to provide four lanes of travel on Shaugrt 3s”
Elgin to Whyte, weekdays between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. Parking wo. b
eliminated cn this part of Shaughnessy during this time period.

Four lanes cf travel through the downtown area would increase ipacity
through the McAllister intersection. However, because of the wo lane
underpass to the north, this capacity increase would likely : :ve no
benefit. The underpass is presently running near capacity in the
northbound direction, during the afternoon peak period. Two approach
lanes to the underpass would oniy serve as extra storage, and overall
delays would likely remain the same.

Signal Timing at the McAllister/Shaughnessy Intersection

The McAllister signal has an existing intergreen clearance period of 3.0
seconds. To comply with RTAC standards, this interval should be increased
to 4.0 seconds, (3.0s of amber and 1.0s of ail red).

Pedestrian Crossing and Curve Warning signs

Three existing painted crosswalks on Shaughnessy at Wilson, Marpole, and
Whyte do not have pedestrian signs marking them. These crossings should
be marked with RA-4 pedestrian signs mounted back to back on each side of
the roadway, as show on figure 2.

A Significant percentage of the accidents occurring at the Marpole and
Wilson intersections are due to drivers missing the curve on Shaughnessy.
Curve Warning signs should be mounted for both directions, and reflective
markers placed along the curve centerline.

Left Turn Lanes onto Wilson and Marpole

Hamilton has recommended the installation of left turn lanes onto Marpole
and Wilson as shown on figure 2. The existing 14.0m pavement width on
Shaughnessy is adequate for the additional lanes. By installing left turn
lanes, drivers will be channeled onto a narrower through lane, which
should assist drivers through the intersection more safely.
