John Harker and his wife Gail. « Timber company gives major ‘stake to northern university "Northwood Pulp and Timber Ltd. of Prince George has given - the Interior University Society a ’ big boost with a $350,000 com- mitment to their proposed northern university. This com- mitment towards establishing post-secondary education in the north was announced recently by Les Waldie, vice president of _ industrial and public relations at ' Northwood. . "We are pleased to make this commitment. on the eve of Northwood's 25th anniver- sary,”’ said ‘Waldie, ‘‘and com- mend the Interior University Society on their work to date in developing. the concept of a northern university.’’ The socie- ty’s president, Elsie Gerdes, notes the provincial- government has a matching grant policy for universities, effectively placing the value of Northwood’s com- mitment at $700,000, and she saluted Northwood for their support towards building: a university in the north. The university society has been urging ‘municipalities and business enterprises in the north to demonstrate their support with contributions of land or money. To date, the councils of Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, McBride, Kitimat and Fort St. James have offered land for local campuses. V8G 2X8 footsteps of an era long passed, 7 Thornhill firefighters, - along. with wives, children and grand- parents, began ‘collecting «old toys that residents left at the firehall, This began as a weekly event, held every Monday, but it soon became a daily event with hundreds of donations coming in, And almost every toy had to be repaired, painted, brushed or combed. It took over 30 dedicated people three months to. collect, repair, wrap and deliver the gifts. “But it was really a joy,” says fire chief Art Hoving’s wife Billie. ‘‘The people of Terrace . and Thornhill really had heart this year. They donated toys that probably. haven’t even been used. About two thirds of them looked almost brand new... at least after being worked on and brushed and combed.”* She adds that Richards Cleaners was also a big help to their cause — all stuffed and cloth toys were cleaned and sanitized. -Delaronde agrees that it was a rewarding experience for every- one. “It was a lot of fun and we want to thank everyone for be- ing so generous,”’ he says. ‘“We hope that next year will be an- . other success — we want to double it again.” , = fUD Thanks to all our friends and customers. 635-7158
