Benefit concert Singer says she’s honoured to assist transition house By JOANNA WONG WHEN MAE Moore speaks, you can’t help but hear music. Chatting with the Man- itoba-born singer-songwri- ter over the phone, every Syllable seems to ring with the soulful, melodic lilt she’ s.renowned-for.--- “Right: now, Moore is talking about her upcom- ing benefit-concert. for the Terrice- Transition House at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre. “I'm feeling really ex- cited about coming to Ter- race. and) wished © I'd blocked ‘up more time’ to just hang-out,” she says. The ‘June 16° concert will see Moore. helping raise. funds for the. trans- ition house’s new wheel- chair-accessible facility. ~“We-need to. get behind this kind of thing,” she says, “It’s an indication of the health of a commun- ity.” While Terrace. won't be Moore's first benefit con- cert, the singer. is particu- larly sensitive to. the trans- _ition house’s cause. “I've had personal ex- perience with violence in relationships and I want to help,” she says. “I'm hon- oured they asked me.” ’ Growing up with a pro- fessional jazz musician for a father, music has always been an integral part of Moore’s fife. ' “i was very shy and turned to songwriting as a nieans of expressing my- self — it was my little shel- tering place and it grew from there,” she says. ‘Moore landed her first gig-at 17 in one of south- ‘ern Ontario's smoky coffee houses. While Moore admits that her music career has ” - been very hard on roman- tic relationships, she says she's finally found happi- ness with fiance and fel- low musician Lester Quit- zau, who plays with the Juno-nominated band, Tri- continental. “It's the perfect situa- tion — we support and un- derstand each other,” says Moore, who will be mar- ried in September on the west coast. Until then, Moore will continue doing what she loves, spending the sum- mer at a Variety of folk festivals and touring the U.S. in June. “What I hope I can do with my songs is help people feel less alone,” says Moore. “When I lis- ten to records I feel a part of something bigger than myself -— music has the power to do that.
