Enge, City Engineer Subject: Construction of Mary HII} Rodd South of the 1300 Block ~« Works and Services Committee October 8, 1985 Recommendayions: — 1. That Counell confirm the widening of the South ond of Mary Hill Road as ane of the Projects to be Included In the 1986 Budget. @e That Counell authorize the Engineering department to cal | tor proposals from Consultant Engineers for the design of the road widening of Mary HI!| Road. Backaground and Comments: The Works and Services Committee considerad a IIist of Projacts which. the Engineering department has on hand for design in 1986. A copy of the list Is attached. The first six projects on the Ilst are those which Council! has already glven approval to In some form or other and the remaining three area works which are recommended for consideration In the 1986 Budget. It 1s not necessary for Council! to make a decision at this stage on the last two projocts. However, the Mary HI!| widening projact Is critical and If Councll agrees with the work to be dona, than It should be started vary shortly. As you know, In December the Mary HII! Bypass wlil be opened and Mary HII] Road wil! ba one of the routes that can be used to gat to the Bypass. There Is no question that It wlll be used by some people. The diffleulty is that the road is quite narrow at the Seuth end and would not be safe for two lanas of traffle In opposite directions. Ultimately we would see the road betng widened to four lanes but Initially It would be quite satisfactory Just to have two full fanes of traffle. The diffleculty with widening Is the |Imitted space and the steep side slopes. For 1986 we would anticlpate that a design would be done showing the ultimate width and then only as much work as would be necessary to complete the two tanes would be undertaken at this time except where such work would be redundant In the final widening. In such cases we would attempt to do the base work for the full widening. The project an thik cin Loy
