“Charles Nelson of Prince Rupert coasted to victory In the °40-kilometer portion of the Skeena Valley Runners Club’s > ~annual spring run. Nelson, w ho also placed first last year, finished ahead of two Terrace runners — Ed Ansems and = Colin Parr. Nelson wins again. .. The route wasn’t the same as - in past years, but that made little difference to Prince Rupert’s - Charles Nelson as he added the annual Skeena Valley Runners Club’s spring 10-kilometer run to his many laurels. , . It was a fun run with no medals or ribbons (to add excite- ment, organizers handed out hidden prizes at closing ceremonies). Winning the 10-K portion was not new to Nelson . — he won the previous year as 0“ well, This year’s route was a five- -kilometer circuit starting and ending at the Terrace Library. Ten-K runners ran the route ~ twice, The new route kept all the ~ running on the north side of the Skeena River. Nelson posted a time of 33 - minutes, 54 seconds. Veteran Terrace runner Ed Ansems, who was runnerup in the 1987 event, ‘took second behind Nelson once more in a time of 34.32 — 38 = seconds behind the lanky Rupert runner. - Ansems’ effort gave him a berth on the men’s masters team for the B.C. Summer Games in Victoria next month. Third place went to another long-time Terrace runner, Colin Parr. Col- _ in was timed in at 35.38 — about oné minute behind Ansems. For the ladies 10-K event, Jaci ' Sturn of the home group placed first in 44.49. Prince Rupert’s Janice Forward was runnerup in 47.30, while Nancy Murray of Terrace was 10 seconds behind Forward for third place. Mike Christensen of Terrace took top honors in the five- kilometer section. His time was 17 minutes, six seconds. . Kitimat’s Mark Zielinski finished runnerup in 17.28. Skeena Junior High student David Edmonds took third in 19,27. Sally Thicke of Terrace won the women’s side of the 5-K in 23.45, Maureen McTavish of Rupert was next at 24.29, then Donna Lindsay of Terrace in 24,33. Joining Ansems on the masters team for the Summer Games are Merv Crawford, Mike Reid, Ruth Keefe of Kitimat, Sue Springer and Joyce Findlay. The race attracted 70 runners under cloudy, cool weather. It was the biggest turnout ever for this event, topping last year’s entry of 60. A complete list of runners, their times and placings can be found in this week’s Score- board.
