BACKGROUND & COMMENTS: | This is an existing commercial building that is over thirty years old and built of wood frame and masonry block. The east masonry wall has developed cracks and in my opittion considered to be a hazard. The concer is the structural safety of the wall adjacent a public sidewalk. A oy esa ML eret Ayes, wibwes The following is the sequence of events: August 16, 1993 - A complaint was received by the Building Department that the wall next to the sidewalk at 1532 Prairie Avenue appeared to be unsafe. | August 19, 1993 - A site visit was made in response to the inquiry made. An attempt was made to contact the owner by phone to discuss the problem. The owner acknowledged the concem, but no further response. August 26, 1993 - A registered letter was sent to the owner from the Director of Building Permits and Inspections that the unsafe condition requires immediate attention, The owners agent responded with a phone call that they would investigate and reply in writing. ber 27, 1993 - A second registered letter was sent to the owner from the Director of Building Permits and Inspections that if the wall was not repaired then the matter would be referred to the City’s lawyer. The owner's agent responded by phone that they will hire a Structural Engineer to review the cracked wail. November 22, 1993 - The City lawyer sent a letter to the owner to repair the wall or the City may consider exercising it’s authority to adopt a Bylaw ordering the repair at the owners expense. December 7, 1993 - The owner retained a Professional Engineer to make a report on the condition of the wall and recomm emedial action. The Building Department was sent a copy of the report.
