Girls make >
B.C. teams

Terrace and Kitimat girls have
won spots on B.C. provincial
junior basketball teams and will
be seeing action this summer in
Canada and the United States,

Val Philpott of Terrace and é

Issy Maryntchak of Kitimat who

‘had earlier had tryouts for the
national junior girls team at Ot-
tawa, both earned positions on
the B.C. under-19 team.

They were chosen following
workouts at U.B.C, June 28 to
July 4. Issy and Val head back
to Vancouver for a week of
team practice starting July 23.

Then the team goes to
Lethbridge for the Canadian
Junior Championships against
other provincial winners from
Aug. 4 to 8.

Terrace’s Michelle Hendry
also won a spot on the B.C.
under-17 girls team during
tryouts at the same time. Im-
mediate plans for her squad in-
clude a summer tournament at
Phoenix, Arizona, this week.

On the boys’ side, Aaron
Davis missed the cut for the
under-17 team, but fellow Ter-
race player Dion Orbell was
selected as an alternate to the
B.C. squad. This team was
scheduled to: take: part in the
Pacific Northwest Classic at
Seattle this week.

Terrace’s Dave Hogg missed
the cut for the B.C. under-16
team tryouts. This squad is
slated for action at Phoenix
Aug. 10 to 15,

Two new fires were reported
and extinguished last week. This
brings the total number of fires
to eight for the 1987 fire season.

The Fire Danger Level in the
district is moderate to high. If
the present weather holds the en- —
tire district will be in a high —
danger rating by the weekend.

The travelling public are cau-
tioned to exercise extreme care
with campfires as the woods are
extremely dry.
