} ‘ Fin.Comm.-Stme. .A/C's payable March lst, 1976 Moved by Alderman Thompson: Seconded by Alderman Traboulay: That the request by The Corporation of the Village of Parksville, February 19th, 1976 with respect to endorsing a letter to the Honourable Premier of the Province of British Columbia recommending that English be adopted as the official language of the Province of British Columbia, be denied. Defeated. Aldermen Thompson and Traboulay voted in favour of the resolution. Prior to the defeat of the foregoing resolution, a discussion ensued during which Alderman Thompson expressed concern that the request contained no preamble or supporting statement as to the reason for the request and indicated that he felt that just because the Province of Quebec had seen fit to designate an official language, retaliation to this action was not sufficient reason to request same. Alderman Traboulay expressed a similar reason for denying the request. Mayor Campbell noted that in the Province of Quebec, as well as in many Federal Government positions, it is now becoming a necessity to be bilingual and perhaps this request was an attempt to prevent such an occurence in the Province of British Columbia.
