The United States exploded a third H-bomb in the Pacific this week, despite world-wide pro- tests following the second “4test”’ explosion last month. Piling horror on horror, the New York Times announced simultaneous- ly that “the most dreaded wea- pon of all, the cobalt bomb, can be successfully built.” William L. Lauter, the Times’ atomic expert, wrote that the cobalt bomb could produce “a deadly radioactive cloud 320 times more powerful than rad- ium, “The cloud can travel with the prevailing winds over dis- tances of thousands of miles, destroying all life in its path. The bomb could be exploded from a ship in the Pacific, for example, hundreds, even thov- sands of miles from the coast and the cloud would travel with the winds toward the U.S. west coast and the rest of the North American continent.” . (The menace, of the H-bomb will be discussed at a B.C. Peace Council rally in Pender Auditorium this Friday, April 9, at which Dr. Harold Bass of Tacoma will speak.) Speaking in the House of Commons on March 31, Harold Winch (CCF, Vancouver East) declared that “we should do ‘Destroy bomb - before it destroys us’ ing atomic weapons: “We should go ahead and do it. I suggest that Canada can give a lead to the United Nations.” The Canadian Peace Congress, at an enlarged extraordinary session of its national council held in Toronto April 4, issued a “Call to Canada” under the heading, “Stop the Tests: Out- law the H-Bomb!” Text of, the Peace Congress call reads. “We are facing a _ terrible danger — every man, every wo- man, every child. Who can say that he is safe even from the testing of the hydrogen bomb, whose power can be increased “Canada must act. “The tests must be stopped. “The H-bomb must be out- lawed, with full guarantees to prevent any violation. “It is now the supreme task of parliament and government to bring the nations together to rid the world of this threat. “Every individual and organ- ization must speak. “Let all men and women, of all views and faiths, place life first. “The world is with us. We will destroy the bomb before the bomb destroys us.” more than talk” about outlaw- without limit?” (See also story on back page.) hal W104 y, hes A Lip , Pte, MEMES Hi ALAM ETT EM NEN zag: 1.9 fi a RICE TEN CENTS MOLOTOV to EDEN and DULLES: “Agreement must be reached... for destruction.” . .. to rule our atomic energy RULE OUI New proposals for ensuring peace in Europe and the world have been put forward by the Soviet government in a note to the Western Powers. .
