It does not in the least denigrate our own Canadian ef- fort and the memory of our own heroes to pay tribute to the country and people that bore the main brunt of the suffering and fighting, the Soviet Union whose efforts were decisive in freeing the world from the menace of fascist conquest. Second, the Soviet victory, our joint victory was won with the promise of establishing lasting peace on earth.. The present early but already promising steps to détente and disarma- ment are the beginning of the fulfilment of that promise. WORLD NEWS PRAVDA HITS U.S. THREAT TO PORTUGAL MOSCOW — The Soviet newspaper Pravda April 3 strongly criticized a U.S. psychological warfare campaign unleased against Portugal in the U.S. capitalist news media. It also warned that NATO had adopted an attitude of open hostility to the democratic forces in Portugal. In Portugal April 2, the first democratic electoral campaign in nearly a half-century officially opened, with hundreds of mass meetings and rallies by the 12-political parties taking part in the three-week campaign. The parties range from the Portuguese Com- munist Party on the left, the biggest and strongest party in the ‘country, to a small monarchist party on the right. SOLIDARITY WITH PORTUGUESE COMMUNISTS MADRID—The Communist Party of Galicia has expressed strong solidarity with Portugal’s Communists, the Armed Forces Move- ment, and all Portuguese democrats. The Galician CP is an auto-. nomous part of the CP of Spain; Galicia is the originally Celtic region taking in most of northwest Spain. The Galician language is close to Portuguese. The solidarity statement appeared in the March 31 issue of Mundo Obrero (‘‘Workers’ World”), official publication of the CP of Spain. , In recent months, Galicia has seen a wave of strikes, notably in the shipyards at El Ferrol, which is dictator Franco’s birthplace. JOINT COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AS SHELEPIN ENDS UK VISIT LONDON — Soviet and British trade unions intend to cooperate in the same spirit they did during World War II, when Soviet and British working people were fighting side-by-side against their common enemy. This was the gist of the lengthy joint communique issued April 2 at the end of the British visit of Alexander Shelepin, chairman of the Soviet Trade Union Central Council (STUCC). The communique was issued by the STUCC and the British Trade Union Congress (TUC), the 10-million-member organization which repre- sents nearly all of British organized labor. Shelepin was invited to Britain by the TUC as an official guest, a move which evidently stirred fears among the British right, the Zionists, Ukrainian fascist emigres, and the U.S. Central Intel- ligence Agency. The STUCC-TUS communique said that both trade union groups will hold seminars on problems of common interest, regular joint meetings of the STUCC and TUC, and will cooperate, “in the spirit of the wartime Anglo-Soviet Trade Union Committee.” During his visit, Shelepin met with Len Murray, TUC general secretary, and with Jack Jones, head of the Transport Workers’ Union, Britain’s | largest single trade union. LIBERATION VICTORY IN VIETNAM MARKS A NEW ERA SAY U.S. COMMUNISTS The “total rout of the Saigon forces is a tremendous achievement for the liberation program of the Vietnamese people,” the Com- munist Party, USA, said last week. “It is a defeat for U.S. impe- rialism and a victory for the American people.” The victory marks a “new day — a new era — for all people, including the American people, who want peace, democracy and social progress,” the party said. The statement, signed by Gus Hall, general secretary, was issued following an extensive discussion by the party’s Political Committee. The World Federation of Democratic Youth has designated April 4, the date of the assassination: of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as an International Day of Solidarity with Youth Fighting Racism in the United States. Extensive marches honoring Dr. King took place throughout the United States on that date.
