Canadian writer and scientist, who addressed an audience of

“By 1931 the plan was far ad-
vanced, and the Nazis, financed
by the profiteers, began to march.
Their plans, however fell
through. And this war we are
fighting is not the war they want-
ed. The democratic peoples of
world went on the march, too;
in England they tossed their
Chamberlains

began its historic and victorious
battle against the fascist hordes.

“And the profiteers? Well, in
1840, U.S. bomber production was
held up because of lack of plas-
tics, and ‘the reason was that
American plastic firms had a
written agreement with fascist

And production continued to be
held up until the American plas-
tics firms wrote to the Hitlerites
asking permission to increase
production, promising at the same
time to give back markets thus
won to the fascists at the end of
the war.

This is only one instance
among many of how the profiteers’
international works. Even now it
is planning to take science back,
to take it out of the hands of the
people as soon as the war is
won. They know this is not their
war. They are not anxious for
the fascists unconditional sur-
render. They want a negotiated
peace,” he stated.

War does not necessarily force
a “boom” in science, Carter ex-
plained. The reason science is
making huge strides ahead here
now is that it is planned for the
national welfare. In the Soyiet
Union great strides were made
in peacetime.

Carter told of experiments with
pregnant mothers in Toronto’s
General Hospital, where it was
proved safer birth could be guar-
anteed by supplementing the ex-
pectant mother’s diet with food
costing a total of $25 for a five-
months period.

“Most political parties say that
we can’t afford to feed our people
in the way they should be fed.
Will we continue to allow profi-
teers to deny Canadian women
safe motherhood?”

Carter spoke of the different
attitude towards science in the
Soviet Union, quoting as an ex-
ample the case of two Soviet
scientists who developed an im-
portant medical instrument, and
when asked if the information
could be released, replied that
“we in the USSR are only too
glad to release it to the whole
world!” There was no thought,
he pointed out, of patents or
profits.

“Tt is fine to think of the won-
ders of science in the Soviet
Union,” he added, “but we are
Canadian, and it is our job to
jurn the natural resources of the
jand ‘we live in into wealth for
the people.

“Tt is not enough to understand
and desisre changes, because de-
sire and understanding is noth-
ing without courage. We must
realize that we have power, the
tremendous power of our collec-
tive will. We must make science
the servant of the people.”

For Albernis

PORT ALBERNI, B.C.—Organized labor in this important
lumbering and shipping center has entered the coming civic
election campaign united behind a slate of candidates for
council and school board and a program of civic improvements

which are expected to further ad-
vance the position of the city as
one of the outstanding centers on
Vaneouver Island.

Final approval of the program
and candidates was given at a
conference representing almost
every labor organization in the
district last week, including the
Labor-Progressive Party and the
CCF. The conference developed
out of a previous meeting last Oc-
tober, at which a continuations
committee was choSen jfto lay
plans for the elections, to be held
December 16 in both Port Alberni
and Alberni.

A policy of endorsing those can-
didates whose record was accept-

able to labor and nomination of

straight labor candidates was ap-
proved.

The unity slate for Port AlI-
berni is headed by Mayor W. C.
Hamilton, seeking reelection for
his thirteenth one-year term, who
was endorsed by united labor.
Also endorsed for reelection is
Ald. Jack Woodford, who has
been head of the public works

department for the last 21 years:
The two aldermanic candidates
nominated by the committee were
Walter Yates, president of Local
1-85, International Woodworkers
of America, biggest organization
of workers in the district, and
George Dowling, member of the
IWA and active in the CCF.
For school board united labor

nominated Alfred Dewhurst, sec-
retary and business agent of TWA
Local 1-85 and a member of the
LLP, and Jack Ainslay, prominent
in the Credit Union movement.
Mrs: W. C. Hamilton, wife of
Mayor Hamilton, was endorsed
for reelection to the school board.

In Alberni Ald. Tom Patterson,
senior council member, was en-
dorsed for mayor. Nominated for
aldermen were Maurice Dayman,
secretary of the Bloedel TWA sub-

local and a member of the Labor-

Progressive Party, Len Randall,
CCF member, and Charles Laf-
ferty, active in the Alberni Ath-
letic Association.

For the only vacancy on the
school board, Tom Jennison,
member of the Parent-Teachers
