It is not surprising that the
Junkers’ attitude to parliamen-
tary democracy was one of
open contempt. A neighbors of
Hindenbere’s, Elard Oldenburg-
Taunschau, was actually the
leader of the Conservatives in
the - Reichstag. But what he
thought of that same Reichstag:
is summed up in this public de-
claration, that he could “dis-
solve parliament with a lieuten-
ant and ten men.”

ON another occasion he de-
fined parliament as “the
State trough—always the same;
only the swine eating, from it
ever change.” It was the social
system on which such Junkers
based their power that neither
the revolution of 1918 nor the
Peace treaty even attempted to
destroy. Don’t let the Junkers
cheat us awain! They and their
system must be eradicated as
the preliminary to any solution
of the German problem —— or
the problem of Huropean secur-
ity. But with them must also

a “defeat for socialism” in al-
most. every track event. In
Saskatchewan the tories were
alleged to have voted for the
CCH in order to defeat the

“socialism” ‘of Mackenzie King.

In Alberta the tories were al-

_leged to have voted Social Cre-

dit in order to “defeat social-
ism” and the same formula is
dished out as an explanation of
the tory defeat in New Bruns-
wick. :
Quebec is the single and most
striking, instance of tory vera-
city in all its purity. There they~
hail the election of the “tory-
pro-fascist-padlock-law” Du -

plessis as.a real ‘‘vietory. for-

progress and a defeat to social-
ist’ influences.”

It must be stated clearly and
without any speculation or idle
analysis, that old Harry’s con-
cern for “defeating, socialism”
does not stem from any night-
marish fear that the CCF brand
of “socialism now” constitutes
any threat to the vested inter-
ests, wuose chief hobby it is to
preed tory political hacks.

His mania for “defeating
socialism” grows out of a well-
cultivated hatred of the Soviet
Union, its form of government,
and its economic system, which

' proseribes exploitation of man

by man.. From this hatred
flows a class-distilled desire to
keep Canadian labor fast to its
century-old role of docile “hew-
ers of wood and drawers of
water,” with relief slave camps
as a substitute (rather than
socialism) if the wood and wait-
er business hits a slump.

Go back over the pages of
Hansard, which has cost the
taxpayer a good deal to fill
with Harry’s tory orations, and
there you will find the evidence
of a political pedigree which
makes an old tory hack still
valuable in the party stables;
also the reason why he is be-
ing trotted out at this time and
groomed for the race.

High hopes-are entertained
that perhaps, perhaps, he can
win on a foul in a five entry
track.

Yes, the tory Augean stabl-
es are as oderiferous as would
be the operation of a glue fac-
tory at the foot of Granville
Street, and we will be seeing
some dark, (and we do not

as the days go by, in an ef-
fort to win the national classic
event for the tory party.

The chief concern of the Can-
adian people in the forthcom-
ing federal elections, where so
much of Canada’s future is at
issue, is to leave nothing un-
done which will hasten these
tory ponies, not to parliament,
but to the glue factory.

- yee G. BULLITT, cene-time American ambassador to the Sov-

iet Union, is not one of those who believe im fostering: the unity of
the United Nations for the defeat of fascism. He is a disrupter and his
disruptive actions take the form of ‘red-baiting.’ :

The latest release he has made to the American press is probably
the most cynical imsult to the intelligence of the American people that
has issued from the depths of his perverted imagination. “Italians,” he
Says, “fear the war will result in ‘the subjugation of Europe by Mos-
cow instead of Berlin,” and again, “Italians believe the failure of the
U. S. and Great Britain to stand strongly for independence for all

- states of Europe has made certain a new world war.”

Some “Italians fear” and “Italians believe” just what Bullitt wants
them to “fear or believe.” But what Italians? The Italians who would
rather have the subjugation of Europe by Berlin than live under any
form of democracy. Italians who are like Bullitt himself. Mussolini
no doubt; the Italian. royal family; Badoglio who appealed to the British,
Canadian and American soldiers to fight the Communists. And all their
followers, of whom there appear to be quite a few. It would be un-
reasonable on our part to expect that Italians who have been fascist for
a quarter of a century have all of a sudden become thorough democrats.

And it is just in that section of Italian society that longs for the
flesh-pots of the fascist era that Bullitt will find his “Italians.”

He certainly would not find support for his red-baiting among that
crowd of Roman citizens who tore down the flag of the House of Savoy
and hoisted the flag of Soviet Russia in its place.

That was a gesture of condemnation of the Italian King for im-
posing fascism on them and an expression of gratitude to the army of
the ‘Soviet Union for the part it played in their liberation.

__- That Roman crowd yas not composed of the kind of Italians with
whom Bullitt associates. The ‘‘“fears” and “beliefs” of that section
of the Italian people are not about “Moscow subjugation,” put that
the Allied policies may cheat them. of the fulfillment of their desire to
rid themselves of the detested monarchy which thas been on the side
of their fascist masters for the past twenty-five years.

Lo people like Bullitt, whose hatred of the Soviet Union is well”
known, any stick which may be used to beat the “reds” is a good) stick, 2

even if it is taken out of the fascist bundle.

It is no acciden that this red-baitins troublemaker released his | ae

phoney “Italian” story during during the Dumbarton Oaks conference.

l'Humanite Was Largest

\UGUST 13 will undoubtedly become a red letter day in the calendar
of the®Parisian masses, like July 14 when they pulled down the
Bastille and March 18 when they set up the Commune. That was the
day when the Parisians rose and took their city back from the Germans
and their Vichy stooges. :

On that day there were many surprises for the British and Ameri-
can correspondents. One of these writes that only one newspaper ap-
peared on the streets that day. It was l*Humamnite, the official ongan of
the Communist Party of France. It was quickly followed by. others, but
VPHumanite was first.

During the years of the German occupation ’Humanite continued
to appear in spite of the fierce and repressive measures to supress it
by the Nazis. The best known of its editors, Gabriel Peri was murdered
by them, ‘but the publication of the paper was not held up for as much
as one issue. It was circulated by the Communist underground and
anxiously read by the people of Paris.

This continuous publication, the maintenance of all its connections,
has given ’Humanite a head start on all other papers in the French
metropolis. Of the papers circulating today in place of the Vichy papers
which have been suppressed by the de Gaulle committee, ’Humanite has
the largest circulation. It is almost as great as all the other papers
put together.

Ge Soir, the Communist evening paper, edited before the fall of
France by Louis Aragon, also maintained its connections and is to the
fore again, giving, with l’Humanite, the French people the leadership
which enabled them to develop the unity of purpose and action which
has crowned their efforts with success.

Paris has spoken for France, not for the first time either; and
what Paris says today in the name of France is in great measure due
to the inspiration of 1Humanite and Ce Soir.

If we should feel discouraged at times at the difficulties of main-
taining our labor papers here in Canada, we need only think of the men
who carried ’’Humanite and Ce Soir through those troublous years and
be imspired by their bravery in the face of conditions we have never
yet known. We salute them with the fullest measure of admiration and:
pride. They have worthily maintained the traditions of the Revolution
and the Commune.

Not So Smart at That

man has been thrown in the hoosegow across the line for passing
himself off as a member of the RCMP. It is hard to understand how
anyone above the status of a moron could descend so low.

He was arrested when a hotel clerk became suspicious because he
spelled “Canada” with two enns, “Cannada.” But that clerk may not
have been so smart as he thought he was. I remember a real mountie
at Allan Campbell’s trial saying there were 36 letters in the alphabet.
