Refusal to Endorse Presidential Candic

“AFL Executive Criticized by Tobi

NEW YORK—(ALN)—Strong criticism of the API executive council for

Replying to assertions by
AFL leaders and Republican
spokesmen that labor, by tak-
ing sides in the election, is vio-
lating the tradition set by the
founders of the U.S. trade union
movement, Tobin declares: “If
Gompers were alive today, he
would be campaigning from one
end of the country to the other
to re-elect Franklin D. Roose-
velt.”

Of the 15 members of the
AFL executive council “there
are 11 who are outstanding
Roosevelt men, one or two who
are doubtful, and two who may
be considered Republicans or
Roosevelt haters,” Tobin states,

‘adding that there is “some cri-

ticism by the AFL general
membership—and it is justified
—because the council failed at
its Chicago meeting in August
to give its opinion to the mem-

bership.”
