I smeerly hope «that ‘all sup- Porters of the paper today will not only continue to give this new instrument of Cana- dian labor their full support but will also extensively en- large the ranks of those who read, spread and support the Pacifie Advocate. _ With best wishes for con- tinued success, Comradely yours, TIM BUCK National Leader Labor-Progressive Party. fruits of victory. crisis. the King-McNaughton policy front. . : and exposed the Tory plot. production through a publicly areas. ersts it fights. eerely as it fights for us! Today, the historic task facing the people of the world is the achievement of democratic unity among decisive sections of the people to defeat the threat of fascist enslavement, and the maintenance of this unity imto the peace to harvest the Even now our country is passing through a ereat political The need for reinforcements overseas has been met by NRMA troops overseas and accelerating voluntary recruiting. But the Tory forces of reaction have used and are continuing to use every despicable method to precipitate a federal election on the conscription issue; which would split this country on racial and religious grounds, destroy national unity, sabotage such social reforms as family allowances, and block postwar measures in the interests of the. men overseas and the home The people must not allow the opponents of social progress to fight the elections on false issues of their own choosing. The labor movement and all democratic forces must unite to defeat the conspiracy of Tory reaction to divide and rule. 3 Decisive sections of labor led by the labor press have fought We must go on from here to the - extension of social legislation in our country. And naturally were proud that in our small way we were able to help bring clarity in the midst of Tory in- spired confusion. For unfortun- ately it is too true that every other paper in B.C. fumbled the ball and fell for the Tory drive. Two weeks after we had printed the imside story of what was happening some of the other papers woke up—and some of them are still driving off at an axe-srinding tangent. ; P.A.—the truth it prints—is a “must” for every home in B.C. What can we do about- it? Were is where one of the simplest, easiest ideas ever thought of comes in. That idea is FIVE BY FIVE. And this is where YOU come in. For FIVE BY FIVE is your way of introducing your paper into the homes that need it, pain- lessly and easily. All you have to do is join the FIVE BY FIVE CLUB and agree to get the paper into the hands of five people for five weeks. That’s simple, isn’t it? Pick out five people, and then choose your way of setting the paper to them, either by delivering it to them yourself or getting us to mail - it to them for the five week period. That’s the ‘initiation fee” for becoming a FIVE BY FIV ER. With your membership will go a membership eard, a club pin, -pecial events for club members, prizes and premiums. : As you see from the pictures of P.A. boosters on this page, we already have a number of enthusiastic FIVE BY FIVERS who are out to keep up their good record. ( ; » -chuk, a ee There’s Harry Asson, | veteran press booster and no stranger to anti-fascist activities. For years, Harrys’ consistent devotion to the labor press has endeared him to progressives in Vancouver. He is a shipyard worker who dis- iributes the paper among his fellow workers. When asked about the new P.A. Harry said: “Now we have an up and coming youngster, stronger than we ourselves to assist in carrying through our “Win the war’ and postwar work. fil be happy to do everything I “ean to build its circulation.” Then there is Bill Hreher- son of the Ukraine and a welder in a local war in- dustry. Bill is an untiring work- er in every good cause; Aid to Russia, Aid to Yugoslavia, the progressive language papers— all these claim his devotion, yet Bill never fails to turn in an out- standing contribution to the English labor press. Bill’s simple comment on why he works for ReAn: “JT was born into the pro- gressive labor movement and always the labor press fights for me and for the workers. I will work for the labor press beeause it fights for all the people.” Then there’ is charming Anne Bedner, an up and coming young chemist, who ¢an cook up more ideas in her fertile mind than test tubes ever dreamed of. In addition to her work, Anne found time to boost P.A. to the extent of some 28 subs and over $100 in the past drive. Bruce Mickleburgh, Prince Rupert school teacher, and lead- er of the local Labor-Progressive Party Club, is another one of our favorite people. It seems that Bruce is of the opinion that sleep is a bourgois illusion when it comes to boosting P:A. “It’s been great selling subs and beosting P.A. Welcome to the FIVE BY FIVE CLUB: Vil be im there pitching.” : Bill Purvis was our star per- former in the press drive just past. He turned in more subs than anyone else. Bill is an authority on the labor press. He knows from personal “experience the. role that it can play. “it is no secret that the average person is arguing on the war, postwar, zombies, Russia, partisan politics, B.C. Electric, or all together at the Same time. I add my two bits worth and generally manage to introduce P.A. as an autho- ritative journal, and declare that eyen if there is disagree- _ment on some points, the paper affords an intellectual treat to any man or woman with an open mind.” Well said Bill. Margaret Shelton, an aircraft worker, and a newcomer in the progressive movement has that enthusiastic zeal that is a pleas- ure to countenance, especially in one so young and attractive as Margaret. Margaret has turned in a goodly batch of subs for a newcomer, and is enthusiastic about FIVE BY FIVE. “J think P.A. should be read by everybody in B.€. It as- sesses the events of the day elearly and expertly. When vou have read one issue you are aiready Jeking forward to the next. I’d love to be a FIVE BY FIVER.” Space does not permit of more pictures this week, but we still have an imposing array of boost- ers to introduce to you. Every week we will report on the FIVE BY FIVE CLUB, which brings us to the $64 question: What can you do today to boost P.A.? JOIN THE FIVE BY FIVE CLUB! ~— : .
