Page 16 — Saturday, December 9, 1944 Candidates Endorsed By Burnaby LPP Club Councillor Harry Ball, Andrew Thompson and James Ryan, candidates for North Burnaby council in Wards Seven, Four and Six respectively in the municipal elections being held December 15, received the enthusiastic endotsation of members of the North Burnaby Club of the lLabor-Progressive Party last week, whilst Mrs. Isa- Free Nehru Sikhs Urge Resolutions demanding the release of Jawaharlal Nehru, popular leader of the Indian independence movement were pressed at a mass meeting sponsored by the Khalsa Diwan Society, on November 19 at the Sikh Temple. The resolution demanding the release of Nehru stated: “Be it resolved that Pandit Nehru, the symbol of democracy in India, the leader of 400 mil- lion people, be released immiedi- ately from ‘imprisonment in - order to strengthen morale throughout the whole of Asia.” Harold Pritchett, President of District One, International Wood- workers of America, CIO-CCL, was the main speaker. Pritchett stated: “Holding Ja- waharlal Nehru in jail will not aid the Indian people to destroy fascism.” He brought greetings from the TWA and praised the Bast Indians for their solidarity and co-operation in the work of the union. > “The labor movement recog- nizes that the struggle on the economic front is not sufficient, | and the East Indian people, im their just struggle for the fran- chise, have the support of the entire labor movement, as do all progressive movements of the minority people.” “The major question is still the defeat of fascism,” Prit- chett concluded, “and the unity developed in the struggle im. In- dia, aS a direct part of the Indian people against fascism in the final achievement of their political freedom.” : Other speakers were N. S38. Gill, Secretary of the Temple, H. S.\Garcha, M. A. and Jerry Hundal, prominent members of the organization, and Fred Wiul- mot, Negro youth leader from the East. The meeting conclud- ed with the serving of dinner in Temple dining hall. bel. Elected in Ward Seven last year he has proven himself te be a leader in progressive moves on the council and has consistently fought for the inter- ests of the people. He is leading: the campaign on the BCElectric issue in the district, has worked continually to protect the in- terests of municipality employees and has played a vigorous part in and out of the council for all reform and progressive meas- ures. He is a locomotive fireman by occupation and a long time trade unionist. : Andrew Thompson and James Ryan have both been tong active in the municipality in participat- ing and leading in all campaigns for better conditions and pro- gressive moves. Thompson has been an active member of the labor movement for many years. He played a notable part in the organization of employees of Shell Oil and has shown a con- sistent interest in municipal problems. He was a candidate in the by-election held in April | of this year when he just missed being elected by only a few votes. An active campaign on his be- half is going forward and is ex- pected to put him over the top this time. Ryan, who has been a resident of Burnaby for many years, also has a long consistent record of Support for and leadership in the progressive movements of the people. His record of lead- ership in the struggles of the people during the dark days of the *thirties are well remembered by municipality residents and he has continued his good work un- der the new conditions of the "forties. The Ward Six candidate is now actively engaged in leading the campaign on the BCE issue for improvement of transporta- tion facilities in the area. Out of the session has come a compromise in the shape of an Order-In-Council which enables the Government to send overseas 16,000 infantry rein-— the draftees while accelerating voluntary en-- forcements from listments. ag : The Tories are striving to force the defeat of the King-Mc- Naughton policy by plunging the country into a general election. They have revealed by their Opposition to the Order-in-Council - their real aim: to gain control of the Dominion government iia a general election called upon the false issue of conscription. Premier Drew and Duplessis and the Tory high command, by arousing race hatred and national disunity, hope to profit from a general election now in order to frustrate the desire and defeat of the Canadian people for Progress after the war. From their campaign against family allowances they have moved to get control of the Dominion to prevent all democratic reforms. Reinforcements is no longer the issue. Our fighting men Overseas are assured of adequate infantry replacements by the new Order-in-Council. National unity can be preserved within the King-McNaughton military policy. But a general election now will disrupt and divide the country, harm our war effort, turn English against French-Canadian and benefit only the Tory reactionaries. : The Canadian Tories. But this is the gravest national political crisis Canada has ever known. The people must quickly solve this crisis by the greatest display of unity and action to defeat the Tory campaign.
