Explaining executive opposi- tion to immediate endorsation, President Bert Showler urged the council to hold consideration. Sam Shearer, speaking in, sup-| port of the resolution, pointed out that the issue of the 40-hour week was of such importance that an immediate decision in this regard should be made. He charged that predictions of a let-up in unemployment this spring was “a lot of malarky”, and urged that the Trades Coun- cil should place itself in the fore- front of any drive to force legis- lation guaranteeing a minimum work week of 40-hours. Pointing out that senior citi- zens should be guaranteed secur- ity and that the present age at which they become eligible for pension payments is set too far past the age when people find difficulty in securing employ- ment, Shearer supported the second section of the resolution, which urged reduction of the qualifying age to 60 years. “We cannot have our old people ly- ing in their beds while their children go out on the dole to keep them.” Shearer said. The show of hands vote in- dicated that the meeting was overwhelmingly opposed to the executive’ necommendation, and subsequent vote placed the meet- ing on record as supporting both delegation and pension act am- mendment. ‘at the piano, with 188 EAST HASTINGS STREET of collective work: will be featured People’s Concert, Pender Auditorin Pender.
