In Danzig, according to this “reliable” authority, “nearly all the women were accorded the same treatment, “many ten, twenty and thirty times!” There is then, nothing to low, too bestial, too villifying which won't eventually find its rest ing place in “Vers Demain.” The material quoted above is not isolated from the general con- tent. They told Ot- tawa that “It should have done this long ago, instead of listen- ing to Fred Rose and company. What possible danger could Ar- cand have been during, these (war) years? What danger, least of all while Germany’s chances (of victory) were vis- ‘ibly melting away?” ‘ers Demain” is a mockery of every Canadian soldier who ever lined a Nazi up in his rifle sights. It is spreading the same demagogiec poison that used to seep out of Berlin. Social Credit cloaks itself thinly in a “strug- gle” against the trusts. Hitler, too, “fought” the bankers. Under both masks waits the grinning death-head and en- slaving fascist: terror. This, then, is “freedom of the press.” A witch-hunt screams from every headline in Canada, anti-Soviet provacations become policy, and the yellow press talks war, Ottawa leads the at- tack upon the progressive forces in Canada—and “Vers Demain’’ is openly sanctioned. Only an embattled people will be able to repel the attacks of the King government and com- pel Ottawa to direct its atten- tions toward the true menace in Canada. An aroused people can Silence the ominous rattle of these copperheads. Only then will Canadians be able to march forward toward their tomorrow. AUNT TAT THAT anc in Saskatcl == hy Nelson Clarke TIE press statement of Dr. J. N. Haldeman, president of the Saskatchewan Social Credit League, in which he attempts to utilize the present federal investigation into the alleged foreign espionage to drum up a campaign for the suppression of the MLabor-Progressive Party, will meet with small favor amongst the overwhelming ma- jority of Canadians. The Communists of Canada have proved on the battlefields of Europe, and in the factories and farms at home, their devo- tion to the highest interests of our country. Our loyalty to Canada is in no way dimmed by the fact that we have frequently had oc- casion to point out that the Soviet Union has been the most consistent enemy of fascism and imperialism, the Most con- sistent advocate of collective action amongst the peace-loving nations to prevent war and ag- gression. Those who suggest that Ca- nadians who take such a posi- tion are disloyal to our country, are themselves little concerned about the preventon of wars, or the final destruction of fascism. Yet surely the whole future of iewan Canada depends on the achieve- ment of those objectives. NN addition to calling for the suppression of a political party supported by over 100,000 Canadians in the last election, and in many constituencies poll- ing considerably more votes than did Dr. Haldeman’s party, Dr. Haldeman undertakes again to attack the adult education division of the Saskatchewan department of education as too friendly to the Soviet Union, and calls upon the government to tell the people the “truth” about Soviet Russia. No doubt Dr. Haldeman’s con- ception of the truth would be represented by the disgraceful tirades against our ally to the north, made at the recent ses- Sion by the Social Credit mem- bers of parliament for WVegre- ville and Macleod, Messrs. Hiynka and Hansell. Dr. Haldeman’s attacks upon the Soviet Union and the Ca- nadian Communist movement brand him as the typical red- baiter. He follows closely the pattern so carefully worked out by the master red-baiters of all time, Hitler, Goebbels and Com- pany, who sought to divide the world on false issues in order to enslave it.
