That would seem to be the principle followed by the gauleiters of the commercial press. Saturday, April 13, “special to the Daily Province,” by David M. Nichol, readers were regaled to a “‘dime-thriller” version of the espionage issue to date. A huge spider’s web, with M. Zabotin, Russian miuli- tary attache in the center, and connecting with the strands of the web, all the principal people that have been arraigned on espionage charges . . and people who are not even formally charged, are named in the spider-web graph of Herr Nichol and the lokal ““Volkisher Beobachter.” Mr. Nichol names them all and “illustrates” the tie-up in the alleged espionage ring. Canadian citizens were perturbed about the legality of the orders-in-council under which citizens have been de- tained and held without the due process of law inherent in Magna Charta. They have been equally perturbed about the method of handling the espionage case, a method which has given anti-Soviet hysteria and covert attacks against sections of the Canadian labor movement precedence over national security. This most recent story by the Vancouver Daily Prov- ince sets at naught any and all concepts of justice and the right of the citizen to be presumed innocent until he or she has been proven otherwise. As far as the daily press is concerned, they are all guilty—so why equivocate?’ When Michael Sayers and Albert Kahn wrote “The Great Conspiracy,’ a story of treason, terror, provocation. and espionage against the Soviet Union, they overlooked some of the Canadian Goebbels’ who are masters at ‘the art of slander and prevarication. Fred Rose, M.P. for Montreal-Cartier is released on $25,000 bail, with the proviso that he must make no speeches nor write on his case, nor, according to the majis- trate’s ruling, must “‘his friends do so, otherwise bail will be cancelled.’’ For Fred Rose the case is sub judice, 1e., he is silenced by judicial decree and intimidation. But this rule governing his case does not apply to the Himmlers of the daily press. They have the green light from “unimpeachable,” “authen- tic,’ “‘reliable,’’ and similar muck-raking sources, to con- demn Canadian citizens before they are ever brought into court. That it slanders a great nation, whose sacrifices for victory over fascism are stupendous, doesn't worry a press that lives and thrives on intellectual prostitution. Fred Rose’s trial opens May 20; in view of the slander, insinuation and prejudice that has poured from press and radio since Feb. 15, when the espionage hysteria was let loose by Ottawa, it must be obvious to the most naive citizen, that Fred Rose and others so charged, are con- demned before they ever enter a court. And particularly is this so in the Quebec of Duplessis, where anti-communism is regarded as a basic virtue, regardless of the lessons of the last six years. That is why it is necessary now for Canadian labor to rally to the defense of Fred Rose, LPP-M.P. An indi- vidual is not on “‘trial;’ what is at issue is a clash of ideals—reaction versus progress. Anti-Soviet, anti-labor provocations and warmongering, versus Canadian-Soviet friendship. United Nations unity, national progress and peace. D. N. Pritt, K-C., the noted British labor lawyer has been retained to defend Fred Rose. Behind this British lawyer (who aided in the defénse of Dimitrov at Leipzig) Canadian labor must stand solid and united; backing the History will defense with moral and financial support. record, irrespective of the hysteria of the moment, that Fred Rose has not been disloyal to Canada. History will also record, in spite of official propaganda and press vilification, that the accusers of Rose are the enemies of Canada and the best interests of the Canadian people. Help Defend Fred Rose! PACIFIC TRIBUNE — PAGE 4 A Canadian ‘Bevin’ On The J By MAURICE RUSH, LPP Provincial Organizer “The type of communist Parties that we have had organized are in my opinion definitely 2 menace to world peace.” Who said that? Premier Drew? Duplessis of Padlock Law fame? Goebbels? Win- ston Churchill? Franco? No! Not at all! These words were spoken by none other than Colin Cameron, well- known CCF figure, speak- ing on WYown Hall pro- gram. He didn’t stop at that. Ac- cording to him, communist par- ties are organized to “advance the foreign policy of the Soviet Union.” With these remarks Colin Cameron has joined the anti- Soviet: and anti-communist ca- bal. His statement is not an isolated . opinion among CCE leaders. Angus McInnis, amonye others, take the same position. These social democrats have taken upon themselves the man- tle of crusaders against com- munism and significantly some of the sharpest attacks against the communist movement today: comes from the lips of these “labor” men. The bankrupt leaders of Canadian social democracy hepe ito stifle the growing desire for unity by charges of “Soviet agents” and “menace to world peace.” They are also serv- ing: reaction by confusing the progressive camp and giving encouragement to pro-fascist and anti-labor elements. imagine the enormity of the lie—!“communists are a men- ace to world peace!! The fight of the communists for sanctions against Japan and fascist Italy constituted a menace to world peace! Accord- ing to Cameron the supreme Sacrifice of hundreds of Cana- dian communists while fighting fascism in Spain was a men- ace to world peace! But carry Camerons argu- ment further. The communist party of Hrance must have “menaced world peace” when it organized and led the under- ground movement against Hit ler! The communist parties of eastern Europe likewise, ac- cording to him, must be “men- acing peace’ because they are helping to carry through sweep- ing social reforms, giving land to the peasantry, and establish- ing the first really democratic parliamentary institutions those countries have ever seej could ge on endlessly, b is enough to expose Goli: eren’s base lie.
