The way to get the Non-Partisans Safely out the back door is to vote them out. But not many people in Vancouver vote in civic elections. The Non- Partisans look after that, too. They've inter preted the City Charter wrongly to deprive thousands of persons of their franchise. They have countenanced a poll tax system: even more ridiculous tHan that in force in the Southern United States, In the South, if you can afford toe pay. the poll tax, you can vote, theoretically. In Vancouver you pay poll tax whether you like it “or not. But you STILL can’t vote unless you qualify some other way. Usually loyal West Coasters (and what other kind are there?) will fight at the drop of a hat when an outsider suggests that maybe Vancou- ver and Paradise are two different places. But while we. still insist that it neyer rains in the West, that our climate, scenery and population are the finest in the world, and that the cor- ner of Granville and Hast- ings is what the poet was referring to when he talked about Crossroads of Heaven, we've come to the point that we must admit to ourselves Cornett 2) Said Adam, “It’s election time.” And Eve replied, “That's fine— Let’s hurry down to register So we'll be first on line.” _ Good government implies you register NOW to vote There is a saying that the people are always right when they vote, and another that says a big vote is always a good one. Both of these sayings bring home to us the need for every qualified voter to register his cpinion on the reeord of th mayor and alder- men coming up for election in December of this year. AN OLD SAYING REGISTER, TO VOTE Before tenants and owners are permitted to vote as citizens of Vancouver, however, they must register. Whether or not your mame is on the voters’ list, it is well to enquire and find out. If your name IS on the voters’ list, swell, but if your name IS NOT on the voters’ list, find out WHY NOT. The provisions of the Act governing qualification to vote are reprinted on this age. IF YOUVE BOUGHT PROPERTY Any person who has acquired an interest in property should at that time notify the eassessor, who turns the assessment roll over to the City Clerk. The City Clerk is compelled to give notice in the press where and when the roll may be inspected, and also five thirty days’ notice where and when the Court of Revision will be held. * The court of revision sits to amend and revise the civic voters’ list, and appeals Should be directed to this court. While the election provisions allow persons OCCUPYING prem- ises of the assessed value of $300.00 to vote, in practice this has been corrupted by the Court of Revision to mean that a person must HOLD personal or real property (furniture, fixtures, ete.) to the value of $300.00 to qualify. GET OUT THE VOTE But regardless of which category, owner or tenant, the first step in the direction of the polling booth is registration. For good government, a big vote is needed. Cornett and his aldermen always remind me of that old line in the Bible about those people who “have done those things which they ought not to have done, and left undone those things which they. ought to have done.” The Non;Partisans have done almost every-— thing they “ought not to have done.” They have let their policies be dictated by big business in- stead of listening to the voters who put them in office. They ve practically brought the city to bankruptcy through their special brand of “good business—whatever they figure that means. They have let city services and facilities get into a state of disrepair that has made us the laugh- ing steck of the country. They've given tax con- ee cessions to monopolies and forced the small home-owner to pay through the nose to Keep the city running. Cynthia Carter them $175,000 money! First, to vote. even e. Ask the mothers who live blocks from playgrounds, and the sick people who can't find bed space in the hospitals and the servyice-- men’s families who are living in floorless base- ments or chicken coops or unlighted garages.
