JAMES STRANGE

Fur ‘trader James Strange
believed that if one of his men
could learn the Indian speech
and habits he would improve
his trading position. So in 1786
he persuaded his ship’s surgeon,
Dr. John MacKay, to remain at
Nootka om Vancouver Island in
the care of Chief Maquinna.
Mackay was given a quantity
of seed, books, pen and ink and
a musket and thus became the
first white settler in what was
to be British Columbia.

Strange did not like toe leave
firearms but he told the Indians
that the British musket would
prove fatal to any who used it,
except a white man. Overcharg-
ing it with powder he allowed

almost threw Maquinna to the
ground, Mackay stayed one win-
ter with the Indians. Strange
never returned to pick him up
but he was rescued by another
trader and was lost to sight:
Strange went down in history
however.

He was the eldest son of Sir
Robert Strange a celebrated
English artist and engraver.
Jameg was born in 1753. He ent-
ered the service of the East In-
dia Company in 1773 and served
in India until 1785 when he led
an expedition to the northwest
coast of America seeking the
furs that Captain Cook’s voy-
ages had reported,

Strange came to this coast in
the trading vessels “Captain
Cook’* and “Experiment," end-
ing a six-month journey at Noot-
ka Sound. He was first to see
Queen Charlotte Sound, which
he named. He took possession
of the country formally, in the
name of King George IIT — a
step which Captain Cook appar-
ently had omitted. Strange wrote
in his journal that he hoisted
the colors and turned a turf in
the traditional manner on Aug-
ust 2, 1788 at a place he called
Oxenford Bay, (now called Sea
Otter Cove) near the northwest
end of Vancouver Island. He also
named Cape Scott In honor of
a trading associate David Scott
of Bombay. . .

Strange returned to Indla in
3487 and to England in 1795. In
- 1804 he was back in India where
he gained high civil offices in-
cluding the posts of postmaster
general and chief judge of
Madras, He did in.1640. It was
not until] 1828 that his original
journal came to light in Bom-

ay.
