ANADA IS ABOUT TO FACE a very crucial federal general election. Itis reallyimpossible to look at it any other way. There are more people out of work today than at any other time in Canadian history. With our present economic position and direction, sources like the International Monetary Fund places Canada’s performance below the average for the western world. Quebec, united by a unique heritage, culture and language has had enough and wants out. And it’s not just the politicians and editorial writers _ talking about national unity, tight money and unemploy- ment anymore, Everyone is. Because everyone’s con- cerned. __ The Liberals have been directing Canada foralongtime and these problems did notsproutovernight. Unemploy- ment has rowing for quite some time, it was their decision not to do anything about it. It was the Liberal’s economic decisions which leaves vidual taxpayers to foot 70 per cent of the income tax and allow the corporate sector to only pay 30per cent. ars ago the corporations were almost paying their » Liberals changed that. aR at 9 Dells EN The Liberals are quite aware of Quebec. That province has supported them in just about every federal election. The Liberals have been steering Canada for quite a while. We’re now almost on the rocks. It’s time to change ilots. r The Conservatives haven’t had anything substantial to say about the situation. Their one big idea — to control wages and prices — was adopted by the Liberals and did more than anything else to tell Canadians that their wages are a lot easier to control than prices or the salaries of corporate executives. The upcoming election gives Canada a chance to change-its direction and get moving again. We cannot await miracles abroad, Canadians at home need their government to consider their priorities first. It is time for the programs andsound economicpolicies of the New Democratic Party — not based on corporate interests, but people’s priorities — to take the helm. The Liberals have led us directly to the position wenow find ourselves. Their priorities and promises have given them no room to maneuver. Wage and price controls was a desperate measure. : The Conservatives lack strong leadership and are out of ideas. The New Democratic Party is Canada’s only alternative. DEMOCRAT SPECIAL REPORT — 1
