THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER wa) ALBERTA CONTRACTS Local 1-207 IWA, Edmon- ton, has negotiated two-year agreements with the Swanson Lumber Company at Chis- holm and Sweetgrass Land- ing, and with the Building Products of Canada at Waba- mum. Local president Keith John- son headed up both sets of negotiations which won sig- nificant wage increases and fringe benefits for the approx- imately 135 employees in the three operations. SWANSON AGREEMENT The Union was successful in gaining a Union Shop clause for the 20 employees at the Chisholm planer mill and the Rand Formula for the 65 employees at Sweet- grass Landing. Other contract improvements in the Swanson Company settlement include: A general wage increase of 15 cents per hour, effective September 1, 1966, and a fur- ther increase of 15 cents per hour effective September 1, 1967, setting a Base Rate of $1.85 at Sweetgrass Landing and of $1.88 at Chisholm on September 1, 1967. These increases will estab- lish the highest wages in the Sawmill and Planermill sec- tions of the industry in Al- berta. VACATIONS WITH PAY Employees with seven or more years’ service shall re- ceive three weeks’ vacation with pay at 6% of total earn- ings . . . again, this is the best in the industry in Al- berta. STATUTORY HOLIDAYS Two additional paid Statu- tory Holidays—one in the first year and one in the sec- ond contract year, for a total of nine Paid Statutory Holi- days. HEALTH AND WELFARE The following clause to be written into the Agreements: “The Company agrees to make available Group M.S.I. on a fifty-fifty contributory basis for all employees cov- ered by this Agreement, ex- cluding those covered by Northern Health Service. IN THE FAR NORTH An interesting note is that the Camp located at Sweet- grass Landing, Alberta, is the most northerly operation the IWA has under contract in Canada, being only 60 miles south of Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories. BUILDING PRODUCTS AGREEMENT The Local’s negotiating committee was able to gain improvements to the Rand Formula on Union Security for the 50 members employed by the Company, which is a subsidiary of the Imperial Oil Company. The committee negotiated a general wage increase of 812% September 1, 1966, and a further increase of 844% September 1, 1967, which will provide a base rate of $2.10 per hour on September 1, 1967. This settlement will estab- lish the highest base rate of any IWA agreement in AIl- berta. Albert retired as business agent of the Local Union April 30, 1965, after 22 years in the union. He was the first official in the Regional Coun- cil to be entitled to the IWA pension on retirement. He was for a number of years an active worker for the old IWW _ (Industrial Workers of the World) until blacklisted by the emvloyers. He joined the IWA while working at the Alaska Pine _ Company in 1943 and was active as a shop steward, plant secretary and plant chair- man. During the years from 1947 to 1963, he was elected at various times to the positions of 3rd vice-president, 2nd vice-president and Ist vice- president of the Local.
