the firefighters were anxious to
try out the new apparatus.
Although the fire service. was
financed by generous voluntary
subscriptions, the men dug into
their own pockets for certain
items. Leather helmets were &
necessity. According to anedrly
assistant fire chief in Victoria,
this defensive covering ranged
in price from:$16 to $125. A
suitable red shirt. which was con-
sidered part of the uniform, cost
a minimum of $16. High prices
even at today’s wage scale!
