.. THROUGHOUT | the _. Market season I have tried to in- - entitled ea _ Sign of the times" Farmers traduce you to some of our vendors. Now perhaps it would be nice if it were easier lo find some of "those vendors, when you visit the “market, - This article is directed to people _ Setting up stands at the market or anyone interested in making a , sign. “ T recently atterded a workshop ““Sigmge do's and don’ts’’ and thought I would pass -- One ‘some of-the information ‘for those vendors wanting to hang outa sign, When making a sign remember to be clear on 3 points. WHO YOU ARE - WHAT YOU DO - WHERE TO GO. Keep it clear and uncluttered. Make the most important information stand out first. Keep in mind the difference be- tween marketing and advertising, Marketing is giving the feeling. ie. “best apples in the world.’ Advertising is the direct informa- tion. ie. ‘Apples — 3/$1."" Build a sign appropriate to what you are selling. For example - keep it country style for a country market.. Colors are important. Stay away from purples and browns. Black and white stand out well, Light colors on a dark background stand out well, ‘Don’t make a difference in the © thickness of lettering. It makes it hard to read. The space between letters should be at least the same thickness as the lettering. Letters 4" x 3” are the best Proportions for lettering. If your sign was to be read by . someone passing by in a car at 5Om/ph the lettering would need to be 1 foot high. To make a wooden sign, cut let- ters: out of “‘signblast.”' Stick the - letters on wood; Cedar is: best. Sandblast and then lift off the let- tering. The letters will stand up from the sandblasted wood. Or you can cut letters out of shelf paper, stick them to your sign and spray paint, Then lift off the letters. A paint called ‘Oneshot’ {it’s an oil paint. available through Bensons graphic supplies) is a good paint for hand use. MDA plywood has a plastic surface and is very smooth to work on. Polycurathane works well to weather proof your sign, T hope some of this information will be helpful for anyone want- ing to make.a sign. Just a reminder, that no dogs are allowed at the Fanmners Market. Also no kittens or pup- pies are to be sold or given away. ‘A permit is in place for the sell- ing of small live stock, Flea market and garage sale items are not to be sold at the farmers market, They can be sold at flea market, at the same loca- tion on Sundays. The primary aim of the Farmers ‘Market is to promote local pro- duct and produce. A Farmers . Market should stay to 50% farm produce, to be a real farmers market. ; The Farmer’s Market starts every Saturday at 9 a.m. in the parking. lot acrass from George Little Park. Lynne Christiansen is a vendor at the market and a member of the market board.
