Wednesday, December 23, 1970 Changing Christmas New opportunities and changing habits have brought us a long way from the traditional religious observances _ and hearty family fun which characterized the Christ- -mas of not:so long ago. _ We still have an abundance of seasonal good fare: in - liquid form we may still command a surplus of Yuletide good cheer, but where now is the simple charm of the Christmas festivities we enjoyed in bygone years? . Perhaps the spirit of Christmas has been lost in the scramble: receiving of presents more elaborate and. costly, the competition to outshine one’s neighbours by installing lights on a grander scale, and the tendency to spend more and more cash on the lavish entertainment of friends and acquaintances. Goodwill? Yes; it is all around. But what a pity. so much of it is strictly seasonal! “And there is another area of concern:’ What of. the _ tender child, caught up in a whirl of commercialized . frerizy? Is it to be wondered that the youngster teday is “more- familiar with: Santa Claus” ‘Sleigh than with Bethlehem’s manger? 7 - Sunday schools are depleted, while scriptural learning is deprecated in many of our public. schools.. Again, his conclusion: ‘It is only the sober spectator, very often the innocent child, who is aware that drinking has become the substitute for everything that Christmas ought to be.” Most of the eritics of the Christmas celebration as we now practice it seemed to ignore this fact. They're alarmed at the loss of spiritual values and meanings and the increase of the materialistic, commercialized orgy of merchandising. They say. in the Lutheran pastor's words, that we've come.to “wallow in lavishness.” True. though. this may. be, it seems to me we could fill the vacuum religiously and ‘live comfortably with the. admitted super-salesmanship if we got back to thinking of Christmas as . a festival celebrating the ideals that are commen to -every religion and particularly as they apply to children. Simply buying them off with gifts as a way of shutting them up while we entertain ourselves with the revelry that comes from a bottle, establishing in their minds that this is some kind of alcoholic Mardi Gras for temporarily irresponsible adults, moves us all furtheraway from the real joy and satisfaction that we all crave. Our trouble, in short, is not traceable, as the pastor believes, to the. department stores. - It begins in the liquor stores. THE PARISH OF NORTH SAANICH ANGLICAN. CHURCH OF CANADA. - Rev.
