Hatch, principal a representative group of former teachers and pupils of the school: (then known as the West Saanich School) met, at the school to help the children celebrate Centennial ‘71. Guests were introduced to the teachers -and children by Mr. - Hatch, and the first speaker on the programme was’ Norman Parsell, who had first come to the district with his parents in 1905, J.C. Woodward. formerly Miss. Hazel. Fletcher: Mrs. Woodward taught at the. school from’ 1921 to..1925, and | Miss Wright from 1922 to.1925. Miss Wright and Mrs. Woodward both spoke of the happy days thev had spent at the school, the friendly attitude of the parents, and the wonderful sense of sport- smanship that predominated. Brentwood School has always been tops in sports, and the boys basketball team of that. period was no exception.- With ‘volunteer labour. of parents and friends a tennis court was built. and. racquets and balls were donated, a rack for the racquets and balls being made and-. donated. by the late Dr. Whitehouse. The big old stoves in the classrooms. were’ something of a. trial to the teachers. as monitors were delegated to feed big. blocks of cordwood to the. monsters. — one energetic youngster heaving the block of wood so hard that it went right through the thin side of the stove. Other former. pupils attending were Mrs. Claude’ Johnson, former Elsie .Taylor,. who had attended the school when ‘there was only one room: Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shiner, formerly. Bertha Snider and Mrs. Cuthbert Brown, formerly Margaret Johnston. Other: guests were Miss Gladys Oldfield. and: Mrs. WN. Hitchin. The former. pupils spoke to the children in. turn, reminiscing on games. played.:’the. wonderful. Christmas. concerts: at. the Women's Institute. Hall, where Miss Wright: both. wrote and directed some. excellent plays, -and tricks played such as putting firecrackers in the stove to. the terror of the teachers ~ The library at that time was: composed of a somewhat motley collection. of books donated by parents and’ friends,. many having been received as prizes in’ Fe “only 160,000. gallons.
