THE REVIEW re BY BEA BOND In the last of a series of articles dealing with the history of Peninsula schools, the writer told of the disturbance to North Saanich routines. caused by the wartime develop-- “ment of Patricia Bay Air Station. _ NEW SCHOOL In the meantime the school board sought a new site for the district’s secondary. school. Chairman R.A. Sansbury, - with Mrs. A. Aylard, Dr. H. T. Coleman, J. Bosher and FJ. Baker set the wheels in motion for this new site. The former site. was sold to the Department of National Defence and with the proceeds contractor Mr: Dutton had the new building - (where today's secondary’ school. now Stands) ready for the formal » opening by the Hon. H.T.G. Perry by September 1943. Cost of the Structure was about $46,000. Because of a shortage of: man- power available at the time, a number of teachers helped with the building. H.W. Cutton. was clerk of works. Many will remember “Bob” Smith who was in charge of the pipe-fitting:. Upon its opening - this: school enrolled. pupils in the North: Saanich district from grades 7 to. 12. Upon the implementing of the Cameron Report in 1946 it carried. an overflow of: about 40 pupils who .could) not find ~ac- commodation in the. Mount Newton High School. It was, even then, faced with overcrowding so _.common to School District 63. Up. to this point, detailed ~-mention has been made of only one high school, North Saanich. _For a few years between 1910 and 1920 when Sidney was a booming mill town, instruction was “provided in grades 9 and:1¢ in -° Sidney itself and it looked as if'a complete high school might some time develop. That situation did - not materilize and until courses began to be offered at North Saanich in 1929, leading to:junior “matriculation, all students had to complete their high. school education © in. By September, 1931 the. con- struction of Mount Newton High School had reached such a stage that it could be used. It was formaliy opened by the minister of education, the Hon. Joshua Hinchcliffe. The first principal was A.G. Smith, who had been principal of North Saanich high school the year. previously. The enrolment was 57. As the school then had more room than it required, it also enrolled grade 7 and 8 pupils and until 1946 when the Cameron Report was’ im- “plemented and School District No. 63 was created, this school provided accommodation for all pupils from grades’7 to 12 in the Central Saanich area, Cordova Bay, Royal Oak and Elk Lake “district,..Prospect Lake, Brent- wood and Saanichton.. During the school year 1949-50 the school reached its peak enrolment - 229 (compared with today)... Upon the opening of the new Royal Oak high in September, 1952, the enrolment at .Mount Newton. dropped to 90, less than what it was on its official opening ‘in September, 1931. Its status was also changed to that of a Junior 3 high school. By J In 1965 the Town purchased for the sum of $11,000 approximately 3°; acres of land between Mills Koad and Henry Avenue for the purpose of constructing a road to join Resthaven Drive to the north with Sixth Street. dater renamed Resthaven) to the south. When the road was constructed through the property, two triangular parcels of land were created, one on either side of the road. These were dedicated for public use. Too small for standard playing fields such as those for. soccer, softball. or. baseball, the parcels could be developed simply as landscaped areas, or used: for some public facility not requiring a large area: The smaller of the two parcels, that on the west side of Resthaven; was chosen as the site for the Senior Citizens’ Centre.
