On Wednesday evening, June 2, the U.C.W. of Shady Creek hosted the Tyro group of Central Saanich United Churches, . and their parents. A large crowd gathered to express their gratitude to Mr. F. Sawyer who has been leader of Tyros for ten years and is now retiring. A great deal of time and thought has been spent by Mr. Sawyer and his co- workers in teaching Mission studies, crafts and fellowship. A short review on the year’s mission study an an outline of the aims and work of. Tyros. was ‘given by Mr. Sawyer to the boys 33. boys received World Circles and flashes. World Circle represents mission study, _. flashes are for. attendance. These | - were given according. to their merits. Mrs.. Hartley of Island View presented a very clever skit using -each. boy using. a letter. and a suitable verse to correspond with ‘the letter.. Brian Hoole asked the Blessing before the meal and Tom Michell acted as Master of Ceremonies. 45 people sat down to a delicious supper, provided by members of the card group and ably convened by Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hamilton. 500 was enjoyed Angus, Mrs. M. McLeish, Bud Michell. and Tom. Michell. Con- solation prizes were won by Mrs. K. McNaughton. and Percy Hamilton and the raffles. were won by Mrs. F. Eveleigh, Ralph Peace, Fred Hamilton, .Emil Sarup, and: Wilf Butler. On behalf of all members Tom Michell. thanked Mr.. and Mrs. Percy Hamilton for the work they had done throughout the season in convening the card parties and looking after. refreshments. Cubs... ac- companied by. their leaders returned to Sidney: after. a weekend camp on-Sidney Island. A flotilla of boats. had: trans- ported the cubs and equipment on Friday to a beautiful campsite ‘situated near the Government wharf on Sidney Island. Here. under the leadership of 7 cub- masters, 2 helper-fathers. Geof Worral and Monty. Gill, and four patro! leaders of Scouts, the boys were kept fully occupied for the whole weekend with a variety of activities. Happily. the.: weather cleared and bright: sunshine greeted the cubs. The activities included a-hike through. the. woods, campfires and campfire songs on the beach, relay games,.a tug-of-war. John the scout patrol leaders set up an obstacle course for the Cubs, which included.a .10-foot.. high scramble. net, rope bridges and rope swings. George Heron kept the boys busy following trails of paper footprints of the wild bear and wuzzer—wuzzer bird! A frog race was also planned, but as only three frogs could. be found, bugs were allowed to participate. ‘A-sand flea was the undisputed winner:..A» sand: castle building competition was held. The Cubs went swimming during. the. af- ternoon. although the water was very. cold. At: the end of the’camp each six ‘was awarded points according to tidiness of their’ tent, their “various positions in. relay games. ‘and ‘points: gained competing ‘in the obstacle race. The Blue Six Cubs a na Scout sé ‘donated during the past year, to. -Reitan and Paul Backhaus. and |: was the. winner. Brian Robinson. Mike Hill. Mike Palmer. Steve Logans Mark Warrington and Leon Braun were the recipients each of a mess-kit. The Red Six was second. their prize being a wrist compass each. and ‘the Yellow Six was third with a prize each of a camp cutlery set.
