My husband and I have been
happily married for ten years,
but now, because of business, we
may have to take separate
holidays this year for the first
time. At least, we are thinking of
it. Of course, I could stay home
for my holiday; but I think I'd like
to get. completely away — for a
few days anyway. What do you

Yes, I’m sure you'd like to get
away, but the only person who
can really answer your question
is your own husband. If he isn’t
totally happy about the idea; you
could always plan a few days’
outings from ‘home-base’,
couldn’t you? If, however, he is
all for your getting away from it
all, then you can go feeling easy

I don’t know what to give my
grandchildren for their birthdays
any more. They seem to have just
about everything, and my
daughter isn’t much help when I
ask her what the family need. My
newest granddaughter is six
months old now. and I do like
knitting, but do babies stili wear
knitted things? I suppose they do,
or is it all nylon and the like
nowadays”

today’s ‘‘everything” - children
can be mind-bending, I agree.
Have you, I wonder, thought of
opening a bank account for
them? You don’t say how old (or
how many!) your grandchildren
are, but an account of their own
can make them feel Very im-
portant little People. Yes, babies
still wear pretty knitteds - as far
as I know! - but it might be a
good idea to get mother to pick a
pattern before you embark on a
garment. This way, everyone will
be happy and your generous purl-
ing and plaining won't be in vain.

I still read stories sometimes to
my six and seven year old sons at
bedtime, but some of the stuff
they seem so fond of is so boring.
I suppose | shouldn't say this, but
it’s true, and it's a real effort to
read it. Can you suggest anything
mums could enjoy reading out
loud.

Campbell lent me just the book
for you and your family. It’s
called ‘‘The Last Man. Alive,”
and it’s by famous educator A. S.
Neill who had endured agonies of
boredom reading ‘‘typical”’
children's stories to his own little
daughter. In this tale he uses
names of some of his pupils, and
suggests that when you read it to
your children you. use their
names, so they can become truly
involved in the exciting plot. This
book is particularly interesting
and different because at the end
of each chapter the children
make their own comments about
what's been going on! I can’t wait
to read it to my own kamily - if
they ever let me get my hands on
it, Right now they're reading it to
each. other, and mum isn't
allowed a-look ‘in.

I get to eat out in restaurants
quite a lot, but [ get in such a
panic at all those knives and
forks at the sides of the plate.
What do you do with them all for
goodness sake?

to that question, but at the
moment it escapes me! However,
there is one simple rule for
sorting out all those confusing
bits of cutlery. Always start from
the outside and workin. If you

utensils down any-old-how, which
looks. awful, and. just ain't
etiquette, no-how! Bon appetit!

DEAR IMOGENE

Rough skin on the back of my
heels is my problem. I want to get
them smooth looking by the
warm weather, as I always go
without stockings then.

Dear Poorly-heeled

Serub those heels gently in the
bath every night with a rubber-
bristled nail-brush. Then, when
you've dried. smooth in a Lanolin-
rich. skin. cream. You snould
notice an improvement in.a few
weeks. If the skin tends to crack
at all. ask the druggist to make
you a speical ointment of zinc and
eucalyptus, or if you don't like the
smell of the latter, settic for the
zinc on its own. Put this ointment
on a little piece of white lint at
bedtime, and keep in place over
each heel with a small. strip of
Elastoplast. As shoes are. often
the cause of rough heels, check on
the fit of yours. You may need
heel protectors - or a new pair of
shoes! When. you're indoors,
wear, thongs: or be ‘Mule’-ish
about the house, and give those
poor heels a complete break!
