Wednesday, September 1, 1971 THE RE VIEW PAGE SEVEN - Comie Books Are No Fantasy World ’- Peter Bosch, 16, has been collecting comic books for almost nine years. He has whittled his. collection down from 8000 to 3000 comic books, 300 of which he considers the ‘cream of his collection’. Peter sells and trades comics both by mail and by person to person contacts. He lives at 10157 Pleasant Street, Sidney. He has written the following article in the hope that Review readers will better.understand that comic books are ‘not the immature thing’ that people often think them to be. BY PETER BOSCH No, comics are no longer. ex- capism reading. Today they show us pollution, drugs, — the population explosion, racism, slums,:.and miscarriages of justice, among other items of controversy. By quoting from a comic called Green Lantern, issue No. 76, I can “remember America ... it’s a good country ... beautiful .. fertile .. and terribly siek! There are children dying .. . honest people cowering in fear ... disillusioned kids ripping up campuses s+ On the streets of Memphis a good black man died ... and in Los Angeles;'a good white man feli ... is killing us all ...! Some hideous moral cancer is rotting our very souls!’’ Does that sound like fantasy? I am greatly pleased by the steps comics are taking. Many parents will be shocked by this change, of course. I wonder what you parents think about. your children reading these types of comics. Isn't it better for them to read about the effects of drugs rather than take them. and. find out? I think so. You don’t. think comics would dare talk about drugs? Well, it’s true. '’ From Green. Gun 7] Gossip WITH GWYN OWEN John and Ann Weir returned to their: home port of Sidney on Monday. They had just spent two months cruising in the Gulf of Georgia and ‘the inlets north of Campbell - River... Their - vessel ‘Kea’, a 25’ vertue sloop, is one of a remarkable class numbering better than 150 and dispersed ‘around the globe. Despite her small overall. size, Kea has remarkably . comfortable living aboard accomodation below deck, and being a heavy displacement, deep keel design has full standing room in the main cabin. About once in a decade a really outstanding new yacht design appears. If it is a fast racing vessel that wins acclaim in world competition it. gains popularity over night... Not so ‘with the deep ‘sea _eruiser. This breed of sailor is shy and. shuns: publicity. Any mention of it will make him run, or sail, a mile. So it has been with the Vertue class and only over a number of years has the full story of it’s success. begun to be ap- preciated. Born on the drawing board of English naval architect Laurent. Giles, the first hull with these lines appeared in 1936 as a small offshore cruiser, gaff rigged... and capable of withstanding the almost constant battering of the North Sea and the English Channel. In the course of time these same hull lines were given their present Bermuda rig and minor changes made to the cabin roof. The class name of Vertue was applied after the rig had been modernized. The yacht fully commissioned weighs 6 tons, quite a difference from the present trend of light displacement: racing machines, and she draws 4' 8" of water. Being.an ocean cruiser, the cock- pit is tiny, a mere 6 cubic feet. of leg room protected by a. high coaming, in effect an extension of . the cabin sides. Even if it were to : surviving a hurricane. and Bill SGN VIS bt WN 93 (SAANICH) ) Bus s Information And Schedules — for the School year 1971-72 fill with water there would be hardly any effect on the overall performance of the boat. A square stern with outboard rudder and tiller completes this cruising man's delight. Vertue ~ was one of the earlier designs to utilize a mast stepped on the deck instead of being carried right through to the keel. This. makes for better accomodation below and easier maintenance when the mast is. removed. Among the notable achievements of the Vertue class are Humphrey Barton’s crossing of the Atlantic in the 1940’s and BOSUN’S YACHTS OPEN EVE SCHOOL BOARD POLICY - PUPIL TRANSPORTATION | subject to available seating: space; Grade 1-3 pupils who live two miles or more from the nearest i: Grade 4 -7 pupils who live two and one-half miles | or - more : from the nearest Elementary School.
