It was all I could do to stop in time to avoid hitting her. Is there anyway. that someone walking into the path of traffic can be repramanded? ANSWER: - I certainly agree that any pedestrian walking across the Pat Bay Highway is putting themselves in great danger. According to the Motor- Vehicle Act, a pedestrian who crosses any highway at a point other than an intersection must yield the right of way to the vehicle. When at an intersection, the ‘pedestrian has the right of way over the vehicle if he, the pedestrian, is following the direction. of a. traffic control device. Pedestrians should also realize that traffic can not stop instantly, and they should be sure they can be seen by traffic, and be sure that there is ample room to cross before leaving the safety of the curb area. QUESTION: - We have just returned from holidays and while vacationing our car was broken into, and some camping equip- ment stolen. Naturally we reported. the incident to the police, and they fourid the per- sons responsible. They said they _eouldn’t charge the culprits for break and entry of. our car, although they. smashed the vent window to'get in. We left for home before we had a chance to clarify this, perhaps you could explain why they could not be charged. ANSWER: -.. The -. police ‘department ‘you were dealing with were likely referring to the Section of the Criminal Code which ‘deals © specifically © with “break and entry; which states vessels and encloses etc., can be broken into. Automobiles are not included ‘in this section... QUESTION: - We have lived in Brentwood all our lives. I’ve given my sixteen year old son the best of everything but he has insisted on growing his hair long and running around with a bunch of hippies. Now he wants to leave home. Can the police do anything to stop him. : ANSWER: - Police often become involved in family problems, and particularly with juveniles. who want to leave home, or do leave home. Unless a child has been taken: from the parents, and become a ward of the government, the main responsibility for the child is with the parents; although the police do assist: where possible in the location and return of missing for your problems would be to obtain counselling before your son leaves home. The Provincial Probation Services provide such a service, and can be very helpful in assisting. with these family situations. QUESTION: -I drive to work in Sidney every morning. At one particular intersection that I stop at I find that Ihave to go almost a car length past the stop sign to see if any traffic is-coming. The view in one direction is com- pletely obscured by trees’-and shrubs. Is there anything that can be done about this.
