Wednesday, September 15, 1971 THE REVIEW PAGE THREE Former Review editor H.V. Green and_ his. wife Eunice have just returned from a six week. tour of England. In the following article Bert puts. down a few of his impressions of the trip. BY H.V. GREEN There is no longer any novelty in transportation from the old world to the new.in a few hours of arm- chair’ travel. Thanks. to the charter flight and remarkable organization: behind’ the. scenes the transition is accomplished today with the greatest facility and ease and with a surprising economy of cost to the traveller. One inescapable consequence of the flight from Europe to the Pacific Coast, however, is the “endless day’? to be endured in the process of homecoming, the day on which the eight hours lost on. the. outward recovered. This ‘jet-lag’, as it is now called, is the natural reaction of the human frame to an excess of - movement on a day that seems to have no end, when the sun is around its zenith for hours on end and there is the feeling U that night will never come. Home at. last. one is utterly” weary, and the following day one is apt to wander about as if in a . trance, ‘and. quite incapable’ of dealing with the weeds in the garden and a formidable growth of grass. Only gradually does one. come to grips with reality and grasp the threads which were dropped a couple of days ago. Our .. homecoming» ‘from England .on Saturday was perhaps a little more tedious than “normally would. be expected. Eunice was up at 6 a. .m., for we -~ had ordered a taxi for the 14-mile journey. from’ Heston to Victoria station in London. We. were “determined to be: early at. Our flight was not scheduled until 1 p.m. Ac- tually the take-off was 40 minutes late. Unusually for Britain the sky was cloudless. Rapidly guining altitude the glorious panorama of the English countryside was delineated in. minature as we sped northward across the shires. was still easy to identify the main topographical features. -of the Pennines and Lake District. and over Scotland the Clyde estuary -A landing was made at Son- drestrom in Greenland for refuelling, but contrary: to ex-. pectations. passengers were confined to the plane during the process. This. was disappointing, but hospitable airport a visit to the Danish gift shop had been a welcome interlude, to say nothing of the opportunity to stretch one’s legs. Arriving at Vancouver Airport . at 4:.p.m.,..and_ with. coaches waiting it was. reasonable -to suppose that we might be home in three hours, especially’.as: one coach ‘would make a ‘call vat Sidney. But it was not to be as simple as anticipated. © ae “In due course we boarded the Queen of “Sidney, ‘which vessel apparently was suffering from internal’. troubles. But all he could get from the starter was a distressing whine. Again and again he pressed the button tono effect. To the rescue came Monty Collins. who hopefully suggested he might tow the. bus with his taxi and start the engine. The driver shook his head ‘in’ unbelief but agreed to give it atry: So -Monty: backed up and. at- tached a nylon rope ta the coach, took the strain and drove ahead. The coach moved a few vards and the rope snapped. Again the -manoeuver was aitempted, with the same. result. Nothing daun- ted, they tried yet again and we moved sufficiently forward to get into” pear. Simultaneously the motor fired and the rope snapped once more. Bully for Monty! Down the highway. and turning into Royal Oak Shopping Centre the engine stalled again. Using momentum to jerk it into life was. of no avail. :‘‘We’ve: had. it,” announced the driver. So it appeared.
