Wednesday, September 29, 1971 THE REVIEW THE LAW IN REVIEW Sidney Review, P.O. Box 70, Sidney, B.C., and will be answered by members of the Sidney R.C.M.P. Readers’ questions are ‘solicited for this. column and may be sent to: The Law and You, c/o The QUESTION: - Just as a matter of interest, I would like to know why there are double solid lines down the centre of Beacon: Avenue, at points where motorists must cross them to enter Safeways’, parking lot, Sanscha Hall, The Travelodge, etc. It is my understanding that double solid white lines must not be crossed under any circumstances. Because of this I get an uneasy feeling that I am breaking the law every time I have occasion to drive across one. Perhaps other drivers have similar reactions. ANSWER: - The double solid lines on Beacon Avenue indicate that drivers may not pass and overtake another vehicle travelling in the same direction by crossing the lines, and they are not meant to prevent turns into the business establishments on Beacon Ave. Turns of the nature you describe would all be left turns,:and when making these turns, you should do the following: signal your intention to turn well in advance, move your vehicle as close as possible and prac- ticable to the centre line on your side of the road, and then make the turn only after you have ascertained that the movement can be made in safety. QUESTION: - Several times I’ve turned from Beacon Avenue to go North on the Pat Bay Highway, after doing my shopping in Sidney, and after travelling 100 feet or so, there’s a car stopped on the road waiting to get in to traffic. This makes me rather mad, as I thought you were supposed to pick up speed in the turn and entry lane, and then fit into traffic. Is this correct? ANSWER: - Now that the portion of the Pat Bay Highway around the Sidney District is almost completed it might be a good time to present a few simple rules and hints to help motorists, as not too many of our local motorists are used to driving on a four lane highway. Here are a few suggestions: 1. On entering and leaving the highway use the acceleration and deceleration lanes.’ When turning right onto the highway drivers should pick up speed in the entrance lane and then signal, and merge into the flow of traffic. 2. Maintain a speed which is consistent with other vehicles in your traffic lane. If you are travelling at a speed which is lower than the posted speed, you should drive in. the right lane and permit other traffic to pass. 3.. Maintain a proper and safe space between vehicles. Do not follow to closely. behind another vehicle. 4. When changing lanes, Signal your intention well in advance, and be sure the change can be made in safety, by checking. the traffic around you; front, rear, and to the sides. 5. Turns at intersections should be made “LEFT to LEFT, RIGHT to RIGHT’’, meaning you should make left turns from your extreme left lane onto the left lane of the highway on your side of the road. Right turns should be made from the right lane onto the right highway lane, however this is done very naturally due to the acceleration lanes ' . which are designed for right turning traffic. 6. When approaching intersections be prepared for changing traffic signals. The lights go through. changes at frequent intervals, and » flashing amber lights:warn motorists of the change. It’s better delayed a’little, than to be saying “YJ thought I could make it” after an accident. - ‘These basic hints and rules coupled with common sense, alertness: and courtesy toward your. fellow driver, should help in creating a ‘safe highway. for. local residents, and tourists alike.” a + te-be Peninsula Players _ By Mavis Edwards The Play Pen on West Saanich Road, Deep Cove, isa hive of activity these cool autumn nights as the players busy themselves in preparation for their. fall production. ‘Victoria’s’ House by Fred Carmichael will be presented on November 5th and 6th in Sidney Elementary School, a mystery play in two acts with an unusual plot not to. be revealed until the first night of production.
