AUSTRIANS ARRESTED
It is not often that Sidney has a

sensation of the magnitude of
that which took place .Tuesday
evening, yet so. qttietly were
things arranged that few people
were aware that our local
, provincial constable had suc-
cessfully captured twelve
stalwart Austrians who were on
the point, as they thought, of
slipping quietly out of Canada in
to the U.S. where they would have
had little difficulty in joining the
German or Austrian forces in the
great war in Europe. ,

A well dressed gentleman
made enquiries early Tuesday
morning as to boat service bet-
ween Sidney and Roche Harbor.
On finding that there was no
service, he. finally made
arrangements with one gen-
tleman who professed to own a
launch for the carrying of 10 or 12°
men to. Roche Harbor, The
stranger spoke fairly good
English but the foreign accent led
the “launch owner’ to quietly
hunt up Const. Macdonald and tip
the situation off.

As a result nine Austrians were
taken into the gentle arms of the
law as they attempted to board
the train for Sidney in Victoria.
The other three made. the
mistake of getting off the B.C.
Electric at Saanichton and
arrived in Sidney in time to meet
-a train with three or four con-
stables that had been summoned
from. Victoria. for this: special
occasion.

The men were taken to a farm
kept for the purpose of giving
‘employment to foreigners who do
not know when they are well off.
